Better than Guinness...

I had an epiphany last night. I was enjoying a couple Guinness beers during a movie, and added a shot of Van Gogh Double Espresso Vodka to it. It was amazing, the espresso really added some complexity to the beer. If anyone out there has both I highly recommend the combo.

Now I just have to think of a witty name for the concoction.

A good stout will have either a coffee or chocolate (bitter) aftertaste. It's not surprising that an espresso flavored vodka would mix well with it.

I never tried that... I should...

The only stout that I find better than Guinness is Murphys... YMMV!

Hush your mouth...:tongue_sm Murphys is a fine beer, but I like Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout, and Youngs Double Chocolate stout best.

but don't try a car bomb with murphys... something about it just tasted off. gotta use guinness when having a car bomb.

When I'm not drinking my own stout, the closest that I've found to my liking was Left-Handed Imperial Stout. It had a chocolate almost coffee flavor, very dark and strong (and kinda expensive I could have made half a batch of my own for the price of a 22 oz.)

Young is one of my favourite beers, period. I wish I could find the old rasputin here, but I had another Imperial stout that was good, but I can't remember the name. I think it was a local too.

Bell's (from MI) is good. Samuel Smiths Imperial or Oatmeal stout is waaayyy better (for me) than Guinness (and yes, I've even had it in Ireland).

Founders Oatmeal Stout is great. Very heavy. Probably one of my favorites. I am not sure if you can get it outside of Michigan.

I got into a fight with Guinness at one time in my life and we never made up. I just don't have the taste for it. I love other stouts though.

Founders Breakfast Stout is to die for... that stuff is great. The body and balance between coffee and chocolate are just right. Its another that is worth trying.

Another great stout is Great Divide Brewing Yeti Imperial Stout. Its as dark and thick as they come. Its been over a year since I'v had any so forgive me for not having a better description, but if you find it try it! Just make sure its not the Oak Aged variant. IMO The oak just ruins a well crafted beer.

I'll have to give that a try - good idea!

I love Guinness (especially after taking vacation in Ireland last year), but usually head for the local stouts and porters. I can get Deschutes Black Butte Porter and Obsidian Stout around here, but my sentimental favorite is McMenamin's Terminator Stout. Almost worth a trip to Oregon for a pint, especially when they put it on nitro.

Wildrose Alberta Crude... only ever available on tap. Wonderful stout and as good as (if not better than) Guinness, which I still love.
