Best year for Gillette Slim Adjustable?

My first and only DE razor is a Parker TTO, and I'm getting sick of it because the head doesn't close evenly and the blade is shifted over more towards one side. I'm looking at Gillette Slim adjustable DE razors on ebay because the reviews here were so good. In your opinions, which year did Gillette make their best Slim adjustable?

I think they pretty much all rocked.

Mine is a '65 (k1), but I think any year of a Slim is a good year.

I'm considering buying a '62 in near mint condition but I'm not sure if Gillette made improvements in later years. I really don't know much about Gillettes.

I have an '62' and '66 slim and they both work fine. You should consider buying British rocket as they seem to be better built and give fantastic shaves.

That's exactly what I use. I also have a '64 in very good condition. They seem to shave the same. My '64 SEEMS a tiny bit heavier, but that may be because the '62 has better balance in MY hand for the way that I hold it. They appear to be made identical.

The Rocket isn't adjustable, which is one of the reasons I wanted to try the Slim.

Thanks for your input. I will probably try to get the '62.

There do seem to be some slight differences in construction from year to year. My "H" has soldered on end caps whereas my "K" has crimped on end plates. The later Super Adjustables seem to me to be slightly inferior in build quality though this is very much a subjective judgement on my behalf.

The above in mind, I see very little difference in shave performance and I'm sure you would be happy with the purchse of any of the Gillette adjustable models.

I won an H-3 off ebay this morning. Pictures are a little blurry but it may be in what listing calls excellent condition. I expect that means no major scratches or dings and no place where the plating has worn all the way through. We'll see.

"Yes, the original Slim Adjustables are fine tools."

You can say that again.

I inherited my grandfathers 1963 in 1996,and it has been one of my smoothest shavers...great for a beginer to learn on....

Unlike a fine wine, every year is a good year for the Slim. Enjoy.

Can't disagree a bit, Len!!!

Never met a Slim that I didn't like . . . but my favorite adjustable is my Slim Aristocrat . . . but that's only because I have a thing for gold-plated razors!

While both the Super Adjustable and Fat Boy razors are great, I still find the Slim (any year) will outperform the other adjustables. But, of course, YMMV!!

That kind of a teaser really, really called for a picture. We'll have to set up a thread dedicated to Slim porn sometime in the near future.

The earlier models were better by just a hair.. From the 3d quarter of 1961 (G-3) to the last quarter of 1968 (N-4) for the nickel plated version.
Type: DE, TTO, Adjustable 1-9
Weight: 2.5 oz (I measured the 1965 K1 at 71g.).... .Also came with gold details instead of chrome, maybe in 1969. available with a longer handle. Later models changed to plastic underside of head. Towards the latter end of production for this model, it also came in a blue color.

+1

I have a '63 that is great.

How many years were they made? I have a (J4) 1964. I would call it GOLDFINGER after the Bond film it appeared in, but if I start giving my razors names, I may end up somewhere one is only allowed to use Bics under close supervision.

I have a O-4 gold plated slim adjustable, all metal with black plastic handle.
it is starting to get some green fuzz on it.
I dont thnk I should use anything abrasive on it. How do i clean it?:001_unsur

Use Scrubbing Bubbles (the original by S.C. Johnson, not the dollar-store generics) and a toothbrush. Be gentle. You can also use toothpaste if you need a mild abrasive.

The green fuzz is oxidation of the underlying brass. Some plating loss has already taken place, exposing the brass to water and air. Don't use abrasive cleaners or harsh polishes - you don't want to lose more plating! Be sure to keep the razor dry when not in use.

Razors that have lost plating may not be beautiful in the collector's display case, but they still make wonderful daily shavers and can still perform like new!
