Been a while - Found my Mecca!

Hey guys,

Been a while and have been busy with school but the forum has not been forgotten. I wanted to update, I have been plagued with ingrowns and razor bump that lead to an ingrown for a good portion of my shaving history. I actually found my mecca from a Gillette Proglide and AOS Sandalwood :blushing: with a good old boar brush believe it or not! I know , I know, I know Gillette is all marketing, frowned upon and not a good product. I used many creams razors, etc. The worst I had was with a DE and never quite got the jist of it. Went onto an Atra, then Sensor Excel which did me good for a while but none better than the proglide :blushing:. If any newbies are reading this, use more cream or soap! I learned the hard way that I was not using enough cream when wet shaving and now must try all the creams I thought were not good enough in the past. :thumbup1: I hope all is well for you gents!

As long as you are using water and a blade, you are wet-shaving. I haven't tried the PG myself, but if you are happy with the shaves and the cost, don't worry about us.

PS - ouch, I just realized that ProGlide = P&G. What a smelly pun that is... but if the razor works, shave with it.

Hey, whatever works best for you!

I got a free Proglide in the mail last month, and figured I may as well try it, but I wasn't expecting much. The original Fusion was like shaving with a cheese grater, pulled like crazy, and felt like it was skinning me alive. But the Proglide gave me a surprisingly good shave. As good I would say as my DE, in much, much less time. Overall, it's a very good razor, but the price of the replacement carts is obscene, so I think I'll be sticking with my trusty Derbys in a 1959 Fatboy.

Now, if a case or two of Proglide carts were to fall off a truck... :wink2:

If it works for you, there's no need to make excuses. Shame about the cost of replacement cartridges, though. If P&G priced them fairly, I probably would have never tried DE.

You can extend the blade life by rinsing it well, drying it, use old jeans to strop or your forearm to strop (go on lifehacker and type in "razor") and spray it with Clean Shower made by Arm and Hammer. So in summary if you dry it you'll extend the blade's life, if you strop it you'll keep the blade sharp, if you spray it with Clean Shower you will protects it against oxidation. There are guys that can get months of daily shaving from a single cartridge.

It cost 28 dollars for 8 blades... ouch!

Although I haven't tried the Proglide, the cost of the Fusion is what converted me to DE.

Well that and the nostalgia.

But what works for you is what's best. Different strokes, for different folks.

Yup, whatever works! I used to get very good shaves from the Fusion power before I switched to DE. But then, I was already using wet shaving techniques, and good prep.

I agree, the Proglide is a good razor, it's the only razor that allow me to go ATG on my chin without hacking my face, but the price of carts are not in my range.
I will still stick to Sensor or Mach3 when it comes to cartridge razors.
