Beard versus Blade

I am new to this forum. Don't let my nickname fool y'all. I'm a total novice to wet shaving.

People have all sorts of preferences concerning razors and blades. While these comments and reviews make for interesting and informative reading, something is missing.

Has anyone ever attempted to connect beard type with blade preference? I'd like to suggest the creation of a suitable questionnaire designed to determine beard type. If I could categorize my beard type using such a questionnaire, it seems to me that my DE blade preference would then have significantly more meaning, especially to those who have beard types similar to mine. I'd then be able to post a personal experience with a particular blade and/or razor and the reader could more fully relate to the shaving conditions.

Interesting, thought. But I'm not so sure such a questionnaire could be made that would truly tell you which blades would be good for your face. Firstly, I think it would have to be pretty subjective, as I don't think people really know how other people's beard feel. Somebody might think that they have wirey hair, but in reality compared to others it isn't all that bad. Also I think blade or razor type would largely be influenced by personal preferences on closeness of shave, price, level of experience, and whether or not the blades they are using are adequate enough not to warrant a switch. I think your shave prep also plays a big part in blade choice, as good prep and an average blade can still yield pretty good results, where bad prep and a good blade can be disastrous. All that, not to mention skin type and direction of beard growth can really influence things. I could shave with the lid of an opened tuna tin on my cheeks, but my neck needs a lot more care as the skin is softer, and the hair grows funky making for more touch up work, and possible irritation. If you come up with something though, I'd be glad to participate. It could be a really useful tool. For now I think the best questionnaire available to you is the Razor Blades section of the Reviews page.

:001_smile Why try and pair it down to an exact science? :001_smile After all how else would we justify to our SHMBO our purchases except for the eternal quest for the perfect shave??????

I like feather blades. I have brown hair.

Way too many variables involved to get much meaningful data. Instead, you may want to keep track of your own progress. Find the blade that works for you. Start with a baseline- chose a soap/cream, a brush, a razor and a blade. After some time with the same set-up switch give a different blade a shot.

Two keys points to remember-
1- YMMV, especially with blades.
2- As your technique improves, you will have to reset your baseline.

Give it some time and patience.
