BBW Dilucot

Well,

Much like Aquanin, I decided to give the BBW Dilucot method a try on a C-Mon Blackie that I was having trouble establishing a bevel on the yellow side.

I did about 4 1/2 stroke sets and it wasnt really cutting arm hairs at that point. I started to speed up the dilution a bit, and felt the blade sticking to the hone. I did about 2 more 1/2 stroke sets and proceeded to the dilution. I finished up with 60 x strokes on the yellow side. Proceeded to strop 50 on Linen and 80 on Leather. The blade is wicked sharp for sure.

Just because its sharp doesnt mean it will be a comfortable shave. Ill keep you guys updated on that. Kinda mysterious on which to stick with now...All Yellow or BBW followed by yellow.

Ill keep you guys posted :)

I usually do full Dilucot but have been experimenting with setting the bevel on the yellow side with slurry, then moving to the BBW and diluting down from heavy to light slurry (not all the way to water) then finishing on the yellow with just water. It is working really well and its very fast, as in around 5-7 minutes from not shaving at all to shaving sharp. These coticules are lots of fun!!

I do this often myself and they're really nice edges.

Yellow is usually faster anyway, bbw is a very slow stone that is always graded as 4000K but the coticule is actually much better at being 1K.

So the finer grit is also faster?

That isnt true necessarily. If that were the case, you wouldnt start with a 1k or 4k stone and finish with a 16-30k stone.

I just read an article talking about the garnet size and the slurry that is created with both stones.

Here's an interesting Story about garnets. This was written a while ago, but I reread it pretty regularly.

The basic point of it is

Bevel work - go for the coticule with heavy slurry
Easiest way to reach keenness on slurry - BBW
Finisher - Coticule on water

There's more to this story, but it will have to wait :001_cool:

Pretty much coticules can set bevels and then finish well, to get the sharpness right though takes practice but it is done by people who have taken time to know their stones well, but putting BBW in the middle is easier and has the same results from what I've seen.

How many laps on your coticule do you do with water at the end Life2short? Do you know which layer of coticule you have?

Great link, I hadn't read that one. I've been wondering what I'd use the BBW stone I bought in a set for besides plane blades. I'm going to give this a try as I've had some trouble with edge micro chipping during the dilution phase on my coticule.

This thread is very useful for this beginning honer. I bought a set from best sharpening stones and I've been getting to know this stone. Totally sucked into the magic, I've never had a honing stone that behaved, felt or sounded like this one. Have no idea what vein it is from, it is light yellow with some veins in it. Now I will have to pull out the BBW and inject that into the process.

Do you think your stone has inclusions that are negatively affecting the edge? If you're experiencing microchipping on every razor, that could be the problem. Or, it could be one razor that needs a layer of tape to increase the bevel angle to the point that it can withstand the process. I've had 1 razor (an ERN) that absolutely required that I tape it.

How "heavy" is the slurry when you start with and how "light" is the slurry when you stop on the BBW?

Not to thrwo off the topic so to speak, but I have to say that the shave was very smooth and comfortable. 12hrs later and I barely have any stubble. Very comfortable indeed.

Please to define 'grade'.

Sorry I read it and didn't make sense either.

Will the blue from a natural Les Latnueses or LPB also vary as the two veins? I don't see blues be characterized by veins so I'm assuming they would all be the same:001_smile
