Baxter of Californa Safety razor review (very upset)

B

BJJ

the razor really shaves well but there was a problem

the pin where its meant to rotate the head of the safety razor just broked with 3 months, i never hit anything on this razor or droped on the floor, so
i'm sure that's a manufacter defect.

plus, this razor was about 85 dollars, i thought i would have a nice razor...

I contact the company they said they can't do anything, so the least i could do is to warn you guys
not to buy this brand. they just dont know how to treat a customer.

it seems my merkur 37c that i paid 40 dollars, is the real warrior, i have had for 2 years and never had a problem, shaves pretty nice altought i think its too have, better than have a "razor toy" like Baxter.

REGARDS

Pics? Is it a re-branded Merkur? It might still be under warranty by the OEM.

No, Baxter is a re-branded Muhle.

Muhle is highly regarded on these boards, I think you just got the misfortune of getting a dud. The head of the razor is made of plated pot metal, and problems with threads on pot metal razors are not unheard of; not common, but not unheard of.

I wonder if the O.P. might try contacting Muhle. They might be willing to send out a replacement cap.

That Really sucks, Thanks for the heads up, I know not to purchase from a Maker that claims there is nothing they can do after 3 months and for $85.00 Oh No B.O.C Razor Never, at least not for me...

who is being so unhelpful? The vendor? Or Muhle? Or Baxter's? I'd try to move up the chain if the vendor was unhelpful.
I became interested in vintage Gillettes and current FaTips because of stories like yours. Like michiganlover said, not common but not unheard-of. I haven't had that problem with either of two Muhles that I've had, so have had no experience with remediation of the problem. But I'd try pretty hard between the vendor and the two brand-names. I recommend spending less on a more solid razor, too -- a Tech or SuperSpeed if you want something mild and brass. Or your could spend more on one of the all-stainless razors.

That picture is totally heartbreaking. Sorry!

Very poor customer service from the retailer. I hope you can get a replacement head from Mulhe like Michiganlover suggested.

I wonder why these otherwise very nice razors are made off this material(Zamak). Any type off stainless steel would be much more durable I think. It does not need to be an expensive type of steel.

Agree ! that's what i did !

contacted baxter twice they said they couldn't do anything, than you guys said that baxter is rebranded by muhlle, than i contacted muhle about 7 days ago and no answers. I didn't really understand why they wouldn't at least send a replacement cap, it's very rare to have such situation with US company, usually i have that kinda answer here in Brazil, but hey, that happens....

I really don't care anymore about the money, just posting this so you guys don't make the same mistake.

that's another reason why i stick with few companies that i know the customer service is good...

regards

I had the same thing happen to me recently with my Merkur 23C. The post on the cap that screws into the handle just snapped off. I'd never dropped it either. I bought it 2 years ago and had no clue where the original receipt was. I contacted Merkur (Anne Rothenstein) and she emailed me back within 24 hours and sent a new head out right away. I couldn't have asked for better service. I would bet that if your razor was made by Muhle they will do something for you as well. Sometimes it's just a matter of getting in touch with the right person.

I'm glad for the heads up on Baxter of California however. If this is typical of how they stand behind their products, they'll never see a dime of my money.

Best of luck.

Sorry to hear about this problem.

This is why I stick to milled stainless steel and plated brass (vintage and modern) razors. Cast razors have a higher chance of failing...maybe not much higher...but still higher.

Maybe a vintage Fatboy/Slim, AT&T, Tradere, or older iKon would work (maybe a Cobra Classic I'd you like single edges). More expensive, but less chance of failure.

Since when does AT&T make razors?

You better send this pic to Muhle since Baxter can't do anything. It's a highly respected company and they won't let this unattended.

Good luck and keep us posted.

The OP already stated he contacted Muhle 7 days ago, and got no response. I have contacted Muhle before also with an inquiry and got no response. Some of us have questioned their customer service. I very much wish this wasn't the case, but it is.
