As the man said in Marathon Man - Is it Safe?

I found this strange looking Durham Duplex razor and I presume that it takes a non standard blade? Although a standard blade fits the pegs in the razor the blade gap looks evil and the blade is far too short (see pic 2).

I presume that trying to use this would cut me to shreds!

Has anyone tried a Duplex with a standard blade (and lived)?

I live in County Durham, so I suppose the name was a bit of an attraction.

Yes it takes special blades. I absolutely would not use a standard DE blade, they are much too wide(edge to edge wise). A carpet blade will fit and some people supposedly use them that way. I do not have one so can't say either way.

Durham Duplex still makes industrial blades, and their carpet cutter takes the exact blade that their razors used to. I believe they can be purchased at Lowe's or Home Depot here in the US - but I don't know about availability in the UK.

I recall reading that the blades are almost shavable, and that with a little honing they can be used.

I find the D-D to be interesting, since it came in both a handled safety razor configuration like yours, and also with a straight razor-like handle. I have a Gillette Tech that someone put a Durham handle on. (The heavy handle makes the head feel extra light.)

If you can't locate a good answer and feel brave, I'd be glad to pick up a package and send them to you!

The "new to B&B" guy chimes in:

I am a Durham Duplex fanatic. However I am stuck with NOS DD blades. You may be in a better position than us here in the States as far as "shave worthy" blade options are concerned. Here, I have only found Carpet Cutter blades, and in my opinion, while they can provide a passable shave, they don't do the DD justice. Ever Ready razor sells DD blades that might be shave worthy. The key word is might. Here is an Ebay link below for someone selling Ever Ready hair trimmer blades. I could not get a response as to whether or not they would sell State side. Let us know if you try them. I have been dying to get my hand on these for a long time to satisfy my curiosity. :tongue_sm:tongue_sm
