A Great DE Blade Experience, and Some Confusion!

Hi Everyone,

I've been an avid lurker here for some time, but I have some questions burning in my mind, so I registered and this is my first post!!!

I'm 53 years old, live in Canada, and I discovered the beauty and art of fine shaving last summer. I ordered a RazoRock Game Changer 76 and loved it so much that I gifted it to my daughter. I replaced it with an identical one afterwards and treated myself to a RazoRock Hawk V3 (both Standard and "A" versions). I've had many amazing shaves and I can't believe I've been using the cheapest of throwaway razors all of my life. I've been spending time discovering blades, including Gillette Silver Blue, Nacet, Treet Platinum, Lord Platinum, Wizamet and Personna. This has been so much fun and I've been learning a lot, while trying to really learn the differences between blades.

More recently, I've been wanting to try Schick Proline artisan blades for my Hawk, but they're pretty tough to find. Italian Barber, who are local to me, have been out of stock for a short while. I ended up opening an account on Amazon Japan and bought a P-30 pack for the equivalent of less than $8 USD plus shipping, directly from Schick's online shop. I saw some Schick DE blades too, and although they were expensive, I couldn't resist and bought two packs. Each pack was the equivalent of around $7 USD and contains 10 blades. That's 70 cents per blade; a lot of money per blade, but not a lot of money so I splurged.

Tonight I shaved with the Schick and think I had the best shave of my life! There's more info to come.

The Schick DE razor had a good amount of blade feel, which is something that I like. It was very sharp and gave such close shave that I dare say it may be approaching my first BBS shave ever. With all that blade feel, there was no tugging at all, which is a big problem I had with the Wizamets. It felt as sharp as a Treets, but with no hint of a weepers.

Overall, I had a fine shave with the Schick DE blade and was mighty impressed. Here's what the packaging looks like:

What prompted me to join this forum and share my experience? Honestly, it's my thirst for learning more, and I know that there are so many veterans here that know so much more than I do. Oddly to me, I noticed that these Schick blades have eerily similar packaging to certain Wilkinsons. Check this out:

I know that Schick and Wilkinson are owned by the same company, but now I have many questions:
  • Are both blades exactly the same, produced in exactly the same factory?
  • Either way, is there a more affordable way to get these blades?
Thanks in advance for any insight you have on this. Please be easy on me, I'm a total rookie and very new to this! Cheers.

Welcome!

They are probably shipped and packed (both make a slight difference) differently for different markets, but general consensus is that they are made to the same specs and in the same factory.

IMO, Asian market Schicks are packaged better (glue dots to protect the edge), but you can search for German Wilkinsons or Schicks. Barring production batch variations, they should be more or less the same.

@helicopter has a blade test for sharpness and has shown that they are indeed the same blade - and at the top of the top tier of modern blades.

Welcome to B&B from Ontario Canada.

I will echo the above I was under the same impression that the Wilkinson Sword blades we can find in our Shoppers are the same blade just branded differently based on Helicopters Sharpness research. So the good news is the Wilkinson blades are much easier to obtain for us Canadians snd can be found on Amazon Canada.

Cheers!

This is really helpful, thanks to everyone for the responses. I really like the way it shaves in my GC76, and I guess I should mention again how I love the razor, too. I feel spoiled that this is my first DE razor, it's so good.

I'll start looking at helicopter's sharpness threads, they look really informative.

These are pretty much the same blades as your Schicks. You can get 100 of them for around $25 Canadian dollars from Connaught in the UK. Shipping is not too expensive.

Thanks for the tip, I appreciate that. Earlier today, I actually ordered 100 Schick DE Germany blades from The Razor Company, in the blue packs. I threw in a handful of made in Russia Astra SP green blades, as well as some Voskhod. Excited!
