What's new

Aristocrat Jr. arrived today

Just got this attractive Aristocrat Jr. at the doorstep today; re-plated so of course it will be a user. I'm taking a couple days off shaving to let some irritation heal up, and will probably try it Wednesday. Any fans of this razor out there that have a comment about the shave? I really just wanted to add a Made in England Gillette to the collection, but if it ends up being an outstanding shaver too that would be the icing! First impressions for me - the English style TTO function is really fun to play with =D

If you have enjoyed a 40s style Super Speed but wished it had a bit more bite....you've found it.

Great shave......Congrats!

This razor is easily one of my favourites. Fairly aggressive but VERY effective. I especially like the thin handle. Congratulations!

Nice score! One of my favorites. The solid base plate adds some nice heft. Used mine this morning with a Silver Blue and had a jolly ol' time.

I purchased what i thought and was labelled as one of these, turned out to be a regular 40s superspeed i think, still a great shaver.

Thanks for all the replies! I'm encouraged to read the positive impressions on this razor. I'm a big fan of the 40s style Super Speeds, ergonomically they are almost perfect but I would appreciate a little more bite. Sounds like I might have my perfect razor here. Now I'm too excited to wait for tomorrow to try it out - going to lather up and load a GSB and give it a day in court! Also, great review ERVARGASNY, thanks for the link!

Hey, looks really nice. I'm curious: I'm looking for something a little heavier and more elegant than a 1960 SuperSpeed, which I find gives me a perfect shave and gets around my nose much better than the other two razors I've tried. B&B members suggested, among other possibilities, that I get an Aristocrat. Is the safety bar (is the "safety bar" the same as the "comb"?) as small on the Aristocrat as it is on SuperSpeeds like the 1960-era? (I think I can get under and around my nose with the SuperSpeed because of its small safety bar.) Is it any smaller on the Aristocrat Junior than on other Aristocrats?

As a general rule Gillette used the same heads for Super Speeds and Aristocrats. But by 1960, Adjustables had entered the line up. In the 40s and early 50s the same heads rule can be used. The Super Speed head geometry would be very close to the Aristocrat Jr. but weight is a different story.
40s SS = 56 grams Aristo Jr. = 71 grams.

I guess once Gillette found (i.e., created) something good, they stuck with it. Seems like the Edwin Jagger logic now, although contrary to the Merkur approach. Kind of like the iPhone and contrary to the old Nokia approach.

Well the shave went great, as I had begun to suspect it is a near ideal razor for me. The great 40s super speed-like handle and head geometry but enhanced with more blade exposure - and I think the extra weight even more so - making for a more efficient shave. The Silver Blue made a good blade pairing with it, and my normal 2 pass ritual resulted in a DFS. Clearly much less stubble remaining than with the same routine with it's SS cousin. Now I've got a great curiosity about the whole TTO aristocrat line and will probably have to fill out a collection of them, as well as secure a pre-need replacement Jr.!

That, sir, is a noble (although expensive!) endeavor. The Aristocrat Junior is the least expensive of the Brit Aristocrats, with most I've seen going for $100-$200. Must admit, they are some of the best looking razors I've ever seen.

My love affair with Brit razors started with a Rocket Parat I won as part of a lot on Ebay (it's still my favorite). British RAD kicked into full gear after that, resulting in the addition of: 2 Rocket HDs, Aristocrat Jr., Flair Tip Rocket, Red Tip Rocket, and a Brit WW2 Service Set Open Comb.

Good Luck!

How are you getting along with that Aristocrat Jr? I kept thinking about this thread so I got my AJ out and was treated to a remarkable shave tonight......great razor!!!

It's treating me very well! It's had the top spot since getting it, the majority of my shaves this past week and a half or so. With the Silver Blue and recently with Gillette Minora blade it's been totally reliable, just like you had, quite remarkable shaves. I'd say the weight and shape of the handle, and the way it presents the blade makes it equal to my beloved Slim in perfection for my tastes in a razor, and gets a slight edge just cause the TTO mechanism is so satisfying to use =D I may have a #16 lined up as well, but I expect I'll prefer the Jr. as I tend to like a more slender handle.
