Are tattoos losing their mojo?

When I was a wee young fella, tat's had a certain mojo, but now every Tom Dick n Harry has em.

Sure there are still those interested in body art but for me they are starting to lose that cool factor they used to have.

Before it used to be the biker's, Islanders and heavy dudes domain but now tat's are everywhere and have lost that certain image that used to go with them.

Which is a great thing. Tattoos used to have a bad stigma about them, and yeah, bikers and bad guys were the ones getting tattoos, but luckily not so anymore.

Those interested in body art are able to get tattoos (and piercings) without a so much of a stigma of either:
A: Punk kid/Criminal
B: Freak
C: Both

I for one see it as a good thing, as I love tattoos and body art, and am glad to see a culture that's more accepting and open to them.

Personally i like tat's, even though i ain't got any. while the stigma is around regarding them, i never judged anyone who had or has em. a lot of my friends have em, heavy dudes and normal guys.

it's just that they might be losing that "cool" factor with now every one getting them? like all of a sudden tat's are in fashion?

the "exclusivity" that used to go with em is no more.

I see an ever increasing number of women with tattoos. Personally it is a turn off. I've never been a fan of tattoos.

I don't have any tattoos, and probably never will. But that doesn't stop me from admiring them on others.

The run-of-the-mill assortment of tramp-stamps, military emblems, religious symbols, tribal art, and the names of ex-girlfriends are a dime a dozen. They don't really do much for me.

I particularly like the ones that have an interesting story that goes with it, or a unique design ... like that guy named Tom Leppard, who has his body 99% covered with spots. Or the intricate designs of the Japanese Yakusa. Or the guy who did his whole body in a checkerboard design. Or the woman I see frequently at a nightclub that has Che Guevara on her arm.

If I ever got a tattoo for myself, I would want my Social Security Number in machine-readable bar-code format on my left forearm in blue ink. Much the same as the inmates at Auschwitz. Because that's the way the government makes me feel sometimes. Less like a citizen, and more like a piece of inventory.

I think tatts are interesting... If done properly... I went to a tattoo convention 4-5 years ago and I saw some nice work, interesting work and some what the? work...

I do respect those who don't have some.

Tattoos have been around for tens of thousands of years before any of us. I'm sure they've gone through countless phases of public opinion, stereotypes and both a positive and negative view. Tattoos are what they are. I could care less if others have them or if others like them. Every one I have has a memory and a meaning. Something I'm willing to carry on my body without regret for the rest of my life.

If you enjoy them embrace them, if you don't just don't get one. Don't worry about what others are or are not doing.

For a span of about a year I was the ONLY guy in my high school of nearly 4K students that had both ears pierced. By the time I graduated any guy with an earring had a pair. Trends come and go. Just do what you enjoy and be proud of it!

I'd say it can be a turn off. Women have to be more selective about what and where the Tattoo.

+1 woman+tat's=fugly.

I disagree if she does it right it can be hot (this is only one example of an attractive woman with tattoos):

nice girl for sure but she'd be far more attractive without it. nice looking skin is far more attractive than any tat on a girl/lady.

she still is attractive though.

That was my point. A tattoo doesn't automatically make a woman unattractive.

You are right with her look she'd probably be better without it, but she is still attractive even with it.

When I was a kid, my dad (no tattoo) would tell my brother and I that a lot of tattoos looks great when they're new, but after a while the color all turns to black and the image becomes blury. It seemed true - when I'd see old guys that is the way their tattoos would invariably look.

Nowadays I've seen some awesome designs, but I still wonder "how is it going to look in 20 years?".

It does seem that tattoos are being overdone; they used to have a mystique and you could imagine that there was a cool story that went with them (military service, foreign travel, biker, a bad night out with the guys...). Now it just seems too likely that the story is "I got mine at the mall by the same shop that did my friends'".

From the neck up, attractive.

From the neck down, trashy.

Overall, unappealing.

funny story regarding tats. in australia an underworld figure was waiting on one of his couriers for a phone call, when he caught up with the guy he asked him, why didn't you call me? the guy said i forgot your number, so the boss took him to a tattoo parlour and had them tattoo his mobile phone number in big numbers on the underside of his forearm, then said to him, there you go, you won't forget now!

I feel sorry for you Jason. She may be a wonderful elegant woman. The fact that you are so closed minded that you'd consider her "trashy" based on an ill/pre-conceived notion that they carry with them trashy undertones is unfortunate. Had you said, I don't find it or her attractive I could respect that, but to label her as "trashy?" Poor form my friend.

See Kenno's response to those comments. Opinionated, yes (we are all entitled). Prejudice and unfair to the subject (her), no. He maintained his position as a gentleman.

The ink and technique used today is much better than those of yesteryear. Tattoos will last longer these days, though many will choose a one time touch up. My oldest is 7 years and looks as crisp, clean and bright as the day I had it done in Saudi Arabia.

No need to feel sorry for me at all. Tomato/Tomahto. My calling her trashy is another way of saying that, to me, I don't find her attractive overall. If you interpreted the word I used as overly harsh, I apologize for offending you.

A tattoo that egregious simply means she and I have very diverse senses of external aesthetics. Nothing wrong with that, and I'm certain it's possible she's an intelligent, articulate, and generally nice person. I don't personally know her, but you seems to think her tattoo(s) would preclude me from having a general, polite conversation with her. Nothing could be further from the truth. However, I am still entitled to my opinion that her tattoo(s) make her look trashy.

She may be "your" definition of elegant. She will never be "my" definition of elegant.

You didn't offend me my friend. She is not a personal friend or someone I lust after. I have a beautiful wife. Your response here was far more gentlemanly. By simply saying that it makes her "look" trashy you eliminate the prejudicial connotations. And yes sir, I agree with you. You certainly are entitled to your opinion. Differing views are what make this life interesting! :001_smile
