What's new

Anyone seeing the Hobbit this weekend?

This Monday I'm treating myself and going to catch a matinee of the Hobbit. Been reading some early reviews and they are generally good. Guess the biggest complaint has been that it's long and has a lot of "padding" so to speak.

Considering the Hobbit is about 300 pages, I read somewhere that the writers were delving into Tolkiens rather large appendices from the Hobbit and LOTR to bring more back story of Middle Earth and the characters.

Regardless I'm looking forward to it.

I have heard rumors that it is not the complete story, only the first part, and that one or two more parts may be coming.
I suppose I'd rather that than have them cut out critical parts as was done with the Lord of the Rings movies.

I was disappointed that they cut out the "Journey Home" from LOTR. I felt that part of the book was just as good as any other part.

As was I.
I guess they had to because they left out the entire sequence where the Hobbits were drinking the water given them by the Ent, which caused them to grow larger than other Hobbits.

I saw it tonight, really enjoyed it. I did not realize until it ended that it was only going to be half the story. I was a bit disapointed, I would have liked to know before hand. Wish I did a little more reading about it.

Special effects were great

I saw it this evening : gorgeous cinematography, thorough and accurate translation of the book to film, long (169 min).
My understanding is that this film is Part 1 of 3.

I was furious when I realized that the movie was over. It was me and a random stranger in the theater, looking at each other saying *** but the trilogy wasn't made for the fanboys. I saw the Hobbit last night and enjoyed it but it was not what I was expecting. It does deviate from the book and attempts to tie in the trilogy, which was frustrating at times, but I understand why Peter Jackson did it. The movie had a different feel, almost like it was for kids. That would have really kept to the original nature of the book.

The LOTR Extended editions does deal with the Ent water (albeit lightly). I am the only one in my family that wants to see The Hobbit; An Unexpected Journey (a/k/a Part I of III).

But my 7 yr old son did make it through almost all of the Fellowship of the Ring Extd Ed. - before falling asleep on the couch during the battle in the Mines of Moria. I think that I am doomed to wait until 2014 when the Hobbit Trilogy will be released on DVD - and try to hold out buying it until the Extd Eds are released

Saw it yesterday with some friends. It was okay. But, was a little disappointed with it. Overall, very well done and I'll watch it again in the theater before it goes away.

Can't wait to see it. I received 4 tickets as well as a $50 gift card to the theater so I will be going at least twice. Want to try it in 3D as well as regular viewing.
