Anyone else following the "Bostonian?"

Was anyone else following this literally NEW Gillette "New" Bostonian edition silver plated razor on ebay? I wanted it for my collection and was going to bid it up to $150 (it was only $79 at the time moments before ending) but wound up going for $327 when it was all said and done with. Beautiful razor and case although it did have a minor crack in the handle like so many other "NEWs" do seem t have.

I was following it and decided to go as high as $72 because I had no idea what it was worth. Even if I knew it would go for that much I wouldn't have bid that high anyway. I wasn't surprised when I got outbid, but I was surprised how much they got. I guess I got a lot to learn about the value of vintage razors!

I think the 'silver plate" had allot to do with it and especially the fact that it was supposedly still brand new and unused. I wanted it badly, bot not $327 badly. I thought that the 'noted" minor crack in the handle might have subdued the bidding a bit and for $125 or so I might have had a chance. I guess I was wrong. Still, a gorgeous piece for anyone's collection. The silver plated box makes it in my opinion, as does the handle engraving.

I was watching that one and wasn't too surprised to see it go for that much. Minor cracks are almost so common as to be expected on these razors and accordingly it seems like they don't effect the price as much as one would think. It's pretty rare to come across a set this nice that still has the shipping sleeve and the cloth sleeve.

Yes, it's a nice set but with a crack in the handle, it's not mint and to me, didn't warrant me spending that kind of coin on it. $180 was my tops. I know the cracks, splits, hairlines, etc. are common but I've got a cased gold New Standard and a cased silver New Standard, both from Ebay and neither having cracks, splits or hairlines, both in what would be considered right at fine, cases too. I didn't pay over $70 for either of them. Bostonian is the same razor, different case. I couldn't justify to my self paying what this Bostonian went for.

i was following this auction also, and never had a chance to get my bid in as the the bids really escalated in the final few seconds, i would have bid $225, becuase of the shipper and sleeve and the condition of the case.

I know what you mean. When I went to place my bid with seconds to go, it damn near locked up my computer. Experienced ebayers all know the drill. To bid sooner generally just runs up the price against yourself.

Makes me quite happy to se this, and thinking what i paid for my bostonian, which is a lovely shaver:thumbup:
