Antique store find...FINALLY!

Well, after scouring most Antique shops in my area without seeing a SINGLE razor...I finally spotted one in a shop today.

I did not pick it up yet, but I was very impressed by this set.

It's a gold Gillette Tech travel set. It has the "watermark" on the head...I should have checked the date code but didn't think of it at the time. It has the gold cylindrical case, a small toothbrush, toothpaste (full), shaving cream tube (full) and the razor. It's in VERY good condition, not mint but very clean. It has only one small blemish on the head, handle looks nearly perfect. The case looked a little tarnished but the razor's gold was very bright.

Reason I didn't get it, they wanted $20 for it.

Is this a fair price? Seemed a little high for a Tech to me, although this looked to be a complete set. I have to check with the experts first. It would be my most expensive razor, I tend to go for the cheap ones with potential since I am still in the using rather than collecting stage.

Should I go for it?

(no pictures) I searched the internet and this site for a photo of this set, I know I've seen one on here before.

Thoughts on the price? Good buy?

The woman tried talking me into some straights though. Not yet. My face isn't that brave yet. She even admitted her husband has bad a mustache for the last 25 years because he TRIED using a straight once and has scars on his upper lip from the carnage.

They also had a rough looking Gem. I'm a Gillette man for now.

Gillette itself really didn't market those travel sets, but they did supply the razors. There were probably dozens, if not into the hundreds, of different sets. Was the Tech in the set gold or nickel and did it have the standard length handle or the short travel sized handle?

In fact, just tell me which shop that is, and I'll go in and give them holy heck for gouging the wet-shaving market. Then I'll take that rotten set off their criminal little hands to make sure they don't cheat anyone else.

Seriously, the Tech is a nice shaver IMHO, and you figure you'd easily pay at least ten on the Bay (including shipping) for a half-decent, cosmetically-challenged one with no case. 20 may be a little high, depending on the condition, but maybe you can get them down to fifteen. If not, figure how much you would spend in gas or time looking for a better deal.

Standard handle ball-end, gold finish; was exactly the same as my nickel Tech at home, except it had the logo on the head, probably because it is older. Mine is a '67. I paid about $6 for it and it's in PERFECT condition after a polish.

It's actually a few hundred yards, so I may go make her an offer. :) I did think it seemed a bit high.
