What's new

Another shave with proraso blue.

Hello all I just completed another shave with my proraso blue shave cream and my Feather popular with a Zorrick super stainless blade (2). All in all in went well almost DFS ! I used my proraso pre/post as a pre shave and lathered on top of it as it has seemed to work well the last couple of shaves. I feel as though I'm starting to get a better lather going with the cream using a large almond size amount in my shave bowl. I'm still playing with water ratio and am sure it could be a better lather. My post shave routine has been WWR followed by my RR alum stick, after a minute rinse with CWR. I then clean up my mess and dry off my razor/ brush, then go downstairs and cool off (this has seemed to help my excessive sweating I was having when applying balm right after my shave). Then I will go back upstairs wet my face and put the proraso pre/post on as a post shave. I'm still getting just a bit of razor burn on my neck but I'm sure this was technique related still, any feedback or tips would be great ! Thanks.

Yeah, I still get razor burn on my neck too. And razor bumps. A few nicks too. Ugh. It's slow going but I enjoy the new (old) way to shave.

Yea it's definitely slow going but also much more enjoyable, I'm sure it's just something that will go away with time ! What's your set up again Casey ?

I picked up a Luxury Shave Set from Target, made by Van der Hagen. It's a black apothecary mug with a puck of soap, pure badger hair brush, and it came with a stand. I have a Parker 99R that twists to open. The razor came with Shark blades but on a trade, I was given some Astras which seem to work well for me. I recently went out and purchased C.O. Bigelow Shave Cream (which is Proraso Green, but rebranded). I like the cream better than the soap. Oh yeah, I also use a pre-shave oil made by SheaMoisture called She Butter Beard Softener & Skin Protector Pre-Shave Oil.

Casey - Just as a heads up...The VDH Luxury Shave Set recently switched their brush from a pure badger to boar bristle. This new boar bristle is softer and more pliable than the boar brush in the Deluxe (cheaper) set. Some of the older Luxury Shave Sets with the pure badgers are still available but I think they are old stock now.

Edit and Update:

Found a past thread discussing the VDH Luxury Shave set with photos of the 2 different Luxury brushes (close to the end of the thread)

OP - Sorry for the thread hi-jack.

Although I got a good shave with the Prorazo blue tube creme, I find the chocolate / cocoa like scent really odd.
Most likely I'll PIF the tube at some point of time. I read about some licorice like aroma but this smells positively of chocolate.

When you first start out your face takes time to adjust to the difference in your shaving. In time your face will adjust to the new shaving routine and become healthier.

Personally I would apply your after shave after your cleaning up so that it could work into your pores to sooth your face.

Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it. Icebear, I found the scent of PB a bit odd at first but have grown to like it. Coyote whisper I tried what you suggested when I first started and I don't know what the cause was but if I applied my balm right after shaving I couldn't stop sweating. So thus I switched to waiting then applying balm or cream, I have been using my alum right after my shave though.

Casey I remember you telling me that now, I picked some VDH select soap but haven't tried it yet. Where did you get your pre-shave oil from ?

How long ago did you purchase this from Target? It is not currently shown on their website. I know that sometimes the stores have items that are not on their sites.

Marc, I got the pre-shave from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I think it was somewhere in the range of $6 - $8. They had others, too. Some were cheaper and some were more expensive.

About 1 1/2 or 2 months ago. Not that long really. And, I recently was in there and they were still selling it.

I started with the VDH luxury set with the badger brush, and I have to say the best thing and only thing I still use is the mug. The brush sheds worse than my dog. It was very annoying pulling bristles out of the soap . I then bought an Edwin Jagger black badger for $28. If I could so it again I would start with the EJ brush and a razorock soap or C.O Bigelow cream. I didn't think the VDH soap was worth it either. For a few more bucks, razorock puts it to shame.

Neither the Target in my area or any Walgreens within a 25 mile radius had any VDH products. I was really hoping to find an inexpensive badger brush. No big deal but it would have been nice. I would really like a Kent BLK8 but I'll have to plead and beg the wife, lol. Wish me luck.
