What's new

Advice on getting a first injector razor please

After 7-8 months with a DE I've been thinking of getting a vintage injector razor. I looked through our wiki. There is lots of information on getting started with DE, what new and vintage razors are good for starting, what blades, etc., but there's very little on injectors.

Is there a thread or other good reference on what's good to start with? What's razors are out there and their pros/cons? How to tell a razor in good condition from a bad one? What blades are available?

Thanks,
Scott

I picked up a nice Schick I2 Hydro-magic a short while ago and i'ts the best shaver I've ever had. Close, smooth and the Personna injector blades last for ever. I've recently acquired another have dozen Schicks of various types and vintages as well as a Pal Injectomatic and find them all great, so much so that I haven't touched any of my DEs for quite a while.

Funny that you say that. I came to the same conclusion that wiki is lacking information in regards of Single Edge and Injectors. I will try to work on a few things such as a list of blades compatibility, put more info in the injector pages and probably have a tutorial, first shave with a SE and injector.

I found this:http://www.safetyrazors.net/schick/schicktech.htm
Good information but not much subjective info like more/less aggressive, etc.

Also, there is one new injector model on the Bay for $14.99 deilvered. It's a no-name and has been reviewed here and elsewhere as the one that was sold on NationWideCampus.com a few years back. Seems to be of medium quality and give a good shave.

I see lots out there on eBay and Etsy for $15-30 that look pretty clean. Guess I'll just read up a bit, pick one, and give it a shot. Unlike a Fat Boy, prices still seem reasonable.

E type and G type are the same razor. Just different plastic for the handle. The E type is Bakelite (Catalin). The G type is just some non-distinct thermoplastic. Both are terrific shavers. There's not a huge selection of available blades. The China-made Schicks (aka Chick) are very nice. Personna also makes some very good injector blades.

As for price, I wouldn't go over about $15 shipped for a G type. Maybe $20 for an E.

The E, F (rare), and G are relatively aggressive. Newer ones are milder.

Prices are very reasonable!
Occasionally see them on BST here, but not very often.
On the bay you'll mostly see Gs. I series Hydromagics get good write ups here.
I preferred my M38 adjustable to my G.

and then there's the C....heaven in a little golden square tube.

If you are unsure what type of injector to get, go for a schick adjustable then you can set it up to your requirements..1 mild...9 aggressive.

just my 2p worth.

Scott,

i just picked up a G type a couple of weeks ago. Using the Chinese Shick blades in it. So far, I really like it. It's a bit of a learning curve. The razor is very light, but also very maneuverable. The angle is a bit different and it feels a little more like a cartridge. I've had some really great shaves, though. I wouldn't trade my DEs in for an injector but I do use it at least once a week. I have another G type that came in a box of razors that I picked up at the antique store. The finish has worn off and it's got a lot of brassing but I'm sure it still shaves. If you want it, PM me and I wil send it to you. It's just sitting in my drawer. This way you can see if you like it and want to spend some money on a more expensive one.

dcobranchi,

Thanks for the info. I'd probably pay a little more than that for a nice one. I'm impatient and $5-10 more than market that gets it to my hand is no big deal for me. I prefer Etsy and buy-it-now to waiting out an auction. Good to know how much over fair market I'm paying though ;)

Haggises,

Yes, the C is pretty! I have broken them into three categories in my head. The E & G are "SteamPunk", the newer I & J are "Arthur C. Clarke", and the C is the "Warhol". There's a newer one too but it doesn't look cool enough to warrant a name.

Morseman,

The adjustable don't look as pretty and cost more money. Maybe one day but probably not for my first one.

BubblesTGP,

I may take you up on that loan offer! Didn't we trade some goodies or a PIF a while back?

Thanks to all of you.

we did. I won a PIF you did for AOS Sandalwood pre-shave and I sent you some Gillette Silver Blues. I have the razor sitting here. Just say the word. It's not a loan - you can have it.

Indeed! How about this? You give it to me, I get some blades and try it out, then we make it a pass around. Sound good? Could help settle lots of curiosity for members.

I asked a similar question recently and now have a Schick Injector G that I really like and also an adjustable (because I like to adjust things) Injectors are worth giving a go.

Another member offered to sell me a couple of other injector models at a very reasonable price and I've agreed. I think this might make for a very nice pass around box. Of course, that's after I've tried them out for a bit ;)

I have found the E Type to be approached with care... The G type is easy and enjoyable....They are all worth trying as the price of admission is low.
