A Very Rare Gillette? Complete Techmatic DE Razor Set

I'm still gutted that I missed this one, because I've never seen this Gillette being discussed nor documented anywhere. It's a Gillette Techmatic DE Razor set, yes a Techmatic that is a DE!!! To me it looks like a prototype that was never sold outside but was given to few Gillette executives for trial. Pictures from the eBay UK auction:

The blade magazine seems to contain a different kind of blade and if you notice, there is only one hole under the razor head. The handle seems to be similar to the one in Anglo American Aristocrat.

This is the auction link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-G...ImwJ5COjzJn1GK4qJxv60%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

Whoever won this did so at a great price and landed possibly the only such set ever to be found. I only hope it was someone here who won it!

Now let me go to a corner and bang my head:a52::a52::cursing:

Wow! I've never seen one of these before either. It looks like a repeating style razor, but odd. I hope someone on here picked it up, I'd be curious to see exactly how it works.

Yeah, this one ticked me off. Not only did the seller post it as a BIN with a ridiculous price, but he/she didn't even post any halfway decent pics of the razor. I found one of these blade magazines a while ago, and have been looking for more about it ever since. There are a few old threads on here that seem to be talking about it, but this one is the only one with any pictures, and they're just of the case and magazine without the razor.

Looking at the patent record, Nicholas Testi filed a huge raft of patents for Gillette that could be related to this razor, mostly during the 1940s. Some made use of "open-ended" DE blades, basically standard DE blades that were only hinged on one end and open on the other, like this one:

And other designs used standard DE blades, like this one:

The magazine that I have looks exactly like the ones in the thread I linked to and this auction, and is loaded with standard DE blades. I would love to get a look at that razor, and the patent numbers from the outer carton.

Was counting on you to step in Porter:001_smile Indeed, the razor looks uncannily close to the patent information you've put up (thanks!). So this is the first complete set with outer shipper and all, and we don't know who got it!!! I certainly hope it's one of ours and he'd step in as soon as he / she collects the razor!!

Wow I need to look at ebay more. I wish I snagged this razor
Believe me, I'm on eBay pretty much on a daily basis but still ended up missing this one unfortunately due to the time it was posted. I guess snagging deals like these depends on being at the right place at the right time.

Missed it - that is OK though - it is ugly.

That is my story and I'm sticking to it ...
I believe you mate...!

If I could just break that pesky habit of wanting to sleep now and then....
+1 to that Tom! This was posted by 3.30 PM GMT which was 11.30 PM in Singapore and lasted all of 38 minutes before it was snapped up. I only wish I wasn't asleep at that time!

Porter where did u find the magazine at?

On eBay mixed in with some other random uninteresting shaving odds and ends. Thankfully the whole lot went relatively unnoticed and I was able to get it pretty cheaply. It caught my eye because I'd never seen a metal dispenser like it, but it wasn't until the lot arrived that I could read the "Techmatic" name on it.

Nope I saw it didn't have the money and razors have to take a back seat for now. Gf wants some dorothy thorpe gglassware I she can decorate the bar and match it up with the silver penguin ice bucket. Whatever gotta keep her happy.

Kick her out! RAD Comes FIRST!

Nice razor :) Whoever got it was lucky!

It's not a double ring or anything and you know the smart buyer will not say anything till in hand. ;)
And we'll wait for the smart buyer to announce his acquisition once he has it in his hands;)

Mate, if you bought this one and sold it off on eBay with a clear title, pictures and description, you could have easily got 8 - 10 times what you'd have paid for! You'd have had some nice greenbacks to buy your GF the glassware and probably a few shaving related stuff for yourself!

Hmmmmm.....
Yeah....!

Thought I had seen just about everything.

That seller really took a bath on that one. Cedarfurnitureman gets more than that for a SuperSpeed.

If ever a razor was valued at $500+, that would have to be it.
