the box is marked set 17 and then over stamped with what looks like military set 18 .....

how can you tell the difference between silver plate and nickle plate?

Any thoughts?

Good hunting

The tins and blade cases are almost definitely nickel, but the razor looks silver-plated to me. What I found particularly unusual about that set was that its serial number, which matched from razor to box according to the seller, would put it well into 1921.

It's a shame that the mirror went walkabout at some point during its life. Otherwise it'd almost look like unsold stock. It certainly never saw any amount of real use, from the look of it.

What a peach of a set. But $8 dollars, that is an amazingly prohibitive price for a set (obviously the box was just re-used for the military set, but for regular punters, $8 dollars seems very very steep back then)!

I have one of these sets, too. Does yours have the mirror tucked into the slot on the "lid"?
The razor is silver plate. I'm not sure about the tins & blade boxes.

Hi Everyone

I pushed myself for it.... I do not know if the mirror is tucked away in the lid or not. I hope I did not make a mistake but I have been shaving with open coms since March ... and the Bulldog is the razor I always go back to!

Good Hunting

Yes, some bulldogs (1914-24)are Triple silver plated, but in Military sets (1917-18) they are silver or nickel plated. Take it to a jeweler, they can test it to see if its silver or nickle.

The seller said the mirror was missing in the description, but you never know.... Maybe they didn't know what they were looking for. Even so, as long as there aren't any nasty surprises when you get it, I'd say you did fine.

Wow very nice set indeed! Usually, (and imo) the silver coatings are a bit matt / cloudy (not as much shiny as chrome) and nickel has a very slight golden reflect.
