A few strop questions

When using a strop that has a fabric element (felt or linen) what is the order of stropping? Does one use the fabric each time?

Also, Paddle or Hanging? :)

Right now I am using a whipped dog "poor mans strop" that I am using almost as a table mounted strop. I think I like the idea of a hanging strop. But I am open.

Yeah I've played with paddle strops, but I too prefer hanging; a little more "forgiving"....Like Doc said, you would use the linen/fabric first, then the leather.

I did find it easiest to start with the strop on a table to help me focus on correctly flipping the razor on its spine - the stop on a table made me move more slowly and with greater focus.
Switching to the hanging strop was easy as I had already started building muscle memory for the spine flip.

Hang up that poor man's strop and get after it - I have been really impressed by the performance of mine. Added a little of the neatsfoot that Larry includes with the kit to bring up the draw a bit and been very happy since.

I prefer hanging strops. Before you get another strop, I recommend practicing with the one you have. I usually strop 20 laps on cloth/linen then 40 on leather before shaving and 20/20 post shave.

Thanks for the input guys. I Feel like i have mastered my cheapie strop. Using it on the counter has helped me get that "rhythm". Im also much better at rolling that spine over and keeping my pressure consistent. So i think its time to get a nicer strop. I ordered the "big daddy" from Star shaving. I have read good things about them.

Also, as its been said, there is just something cool about a traditional hanging strop near the shaving station. :)
