A chance to talk shop

Was in visiting my barber today and had a great time discussing wet shaving, DE razors and straights. My barber used to do a lot of straight shaving but gave it away with the rise of Hep B and later the whole metrosexual revolt. Was nice to actually be able to talk models, brands, blades and product (including several high end dovo/solingen blades that went missing courtesy of a fellow cutter (I cringed))

He even offered to put me in contact with an old saddle maker who makes strops on the side (more as a hobby nowadays).

Over the years we've usually just shot the proverbial about anything and everything else, but it was great to be able to talk shop, get some hints and ideas and to walk away with a pack of Astras for my trouble

I'm hoping he might take a look at getting back into providing straight shaves again as I'd love to give it another go; as an alternative he did have some contacts in Melbourne (about 170kms from here) who go the whole nine yards that might just be worth the drive.

Cheers.

When I was a teenager I used to go to an old Italian barber and he used to use a straight on the back of my neck and it was so enjoyable that I still remember everything about it to this day. Especially the sound of the blade as it cuts the hair. And the warm cream that smelled like a barber shop should.

At some point the old guys retired and all the new ones just started using electric razors on the back of the neck.
