A Boring Shave

I shaved this morning with my boring 40s Superspeed.
It's not gold like a Milord, doesn't have the heft of an Aristocrat, not rhodium shiny like a President.
It doesn't have the looks of an ABC, or the variations of a Fatboy/Slim/SA.
It doesn't have the history and depth of an OLD or a NEW.
It doesn't even have a set of colours to differentiate mild, medium or aggressive.

What it does do is shave great. No fuss, no nonsense, just a great shave.

Anyone else have this feeling with a razor? It's not fancy, but by golly it works.

I had one for a couple weeks, only used it a few times before I traded it. I was happy with it though. No fuss, no nonsense. I somewhat miss having traded it. Oh well, I got my 1922 Old Type with case - Made in Canada as well, for it.

I think the 40's SS is a workhorse of a razor. but you are correct, not pretty, not variable, no lengthy history. Just a great shave day in and day out.

I had a nice one, no plate loss, clean. Shave was on the mild side so I sold it. Kept thinking about that razor, bought another 40's Super Speed to replace it. Live and learn.

Eye of the beholder, I guess. I think the 40s Super Speed is one of the best looking vintage DEs available-- truly a classic design.

I think the 40s Super Speeds look great, too. I don't have. one. I feel pretty much the same way about my flare-tip.

I really like the no-nonsense esthetic of these razors. As you said, just a workhorse that does the job simply and effectively.

They are great shavers, and there used to be more buzz about them here on the boards.

I feel similar about the Gillette Fat Handle Tech..... or Gillette Techs in general for that matter. There is non sophisticated and utilitarian about a Tech head. The way you know is to put the Tech head on a fancy handle like a UFO and it just seems different than if you were to put something like a New or an Old Type head on that handle. Still, I love the Fat Handle Tech just like I love the Super Speed. Truely classic solid bar workhorse DE razors.

+1 Ben. I feel that way about my Techs and my Dad's 1949 Super Speed. I do use a variety of handles with my Techs.

Love my 40's SS. I usually keep it in a hard eyeglass case for a travel razor, but feel the need to dig it out and use it. Every time I travel, I say how great a job it does and gives a nice smooth DFS. Thanks for reminding me.

Unacceptably Lasering Chicken Giblets?

i haven't put chrome wheels on it or an expensive stereo system. Nor have I suped up the engine, but man it purrs like a kitten and starts on the 1st try every time.
What a wonderful shave I get with it.

Endorse.

The Tech is a great head. I think it leaves the Superspeed in its dust.

Booooooring indeed. That's one razor I'll pass on/off. Even the flare tip models have a bit more pizzaz and shave as well. I'll shave with a lady Gillette before 40's supers speed.
