7/8 Buddel Damascus Mini-Razor

This razor is handforged from 1.2842 and 1.2767 in 400 layers. Halfhollow grounded with a french point. The handle is from waxed ziricote wood and the wedge from tin and fibre. The edge is approx. 5,5 cm long.

I think your work is incredible. I am going to start saving my pennies because your blades are awesome. I like your website too and appreciate you putting it in English because I love seeing your work.
Thanks For Sharing!

What a looker

But it looks kind of awkward to shave with.
Have you tried it?

Yes I have. No problems with it. I think because of the short blade it is even easier to shave with, then with a normal razor.
All my straight razor desings are made for useable straight razors. A fancy shape is o.k. until it dont make the stropping or shaving unconfortable.

Buddel,

Great looking razor.

Why do you think that shorter is better? Most blades are longer as you know.
Did you have a problem with the metal or did you deliberately produce a shorter blade.

I really want to know why you think a shorter razor shaves better than the standard length.

Why does the blade look warped, is it the camera? Am I seeing things that don’t exist?

Sorry to be negative but either the blade or the camera is telling me there is a warp in the blade. It shows in the photograph of the centered blade and it repeats on depth of the V in your photographs. I’m not saying the blade doesn’t shave exceptionally well, but it really does not look quite right.

I have seen your razors before and they always look symetrical. This one doesn’t look true.

My first Mini-Razor I made, because I dont had enought pattern welded steel from the forging. After that I noticed, that such a razor is much more maneuverable, than a longer one. It is like a mixture from a japanese razor and a western style straight. As maneuverable as an japanese razor, but more easy to handle, because of the scales and the even grinding.

In the meantime I made several from this Mini-razors and all customers that tried them are enthusiastic.

The blade is not warped :001_cool: but it is very difficult to make a good photo from such thin thinks. The hollow grinding is not absolute even on both side. But be honest, how many big detailphotos from all parts of a razor are shown by the other straight razor makers and producers?
If someone don´t can live with this signs of handwork on straight razors, that are not made with special machines and tools, he must buy a Dovo :001_smile

Thanks Buddel. But I wanted to point out that the photography was doing you an injustice.

The new photograph answers my question, The blade is not warped it is perfect.

It is interesting that the shorter blade is popular. It doesn’t suprise me because
the Feather straight is quite a short edge and is a very effective razor.

Thanks again for your reply and congratulations on your beautiful razors.

Bravo! My sentiments exactly.

My good old Frederick Reynolds has an asymmetrical grind too (in fact, less symmetrical than this one), but you couldn't pry it from my hands...

Mike

P.S. I think I'll start saving my pennies for a Buddel custom.

Very cool looking razor. I find it very J.R.R. Tolkien looking as if it were from before the age of man and used by elves or hobbits. How does it shave?

I actually prefer a shorter blade. I have a Clauss 7/8 that was ground into a french point and had a half inch taken off the blade and i think it's damn near the perfect size for me. I've been "designing" my perfect straight in my head for a while now, and if this had a slight smile it would be pretty close to what i've been thinking up.

I love that approach

Very good. But I must use 3 straight razors for this test shave - sadly. The customer wanted the razor as fast as possible. Hope he will give me soon a feedback.
In the last time I having the problem, that my beard will not grow as fast, as I have to test straight razors. So I using several at one shave, to get a impression if my honing was succesfull
