40's style SS with black knob?

Looking around the 'net, one razor I've seen is one that looks to my untrained eyes to be a 40's style Super Speed. But the knob on the ones in question is black. Reading the Wiki on date codes.variants etc., I see no mention of a colored knob on the 40's SS. So, am I mistaking something else for a 40's SS, or is this a variant that is not noted in the Wiki (and if so, do you have any other references to them, and possibly a range of dates for them?).

TIA for any help.

This is the black tip Super Speed which has a black plastic TTO knob on what looks like a 40's Super Speed handle. AsylumGuido's Super Speed guide discusses this if I am not mistaken. I will try to dig up the link to that very informative post for you.

They were around in 1951-52 and came with either an aluminum handle or a steel handle. All other Super Speeds came with nickel plated brass handles.

Thanks all, wow this place is a fantastic resource (because of all of you of course). :thumbup1:

Thanks, I'd heard that the 40's SS were great (maybe the best of the Super Speeds?). While I prefer the look of the 50's SS and I'm sure I will get one (yeah, one... right!), I picked up an aluminum handled black tip 40's and a nickel on brass handled '53 SS.

Got home too late to go after another, a really clean 48-50 SS. But it went just a bit higher than I'd probably have bid (maybe not, it really was in great shape).

Ahh yes. I think RAD has arrived. :w00t:
