$3@*^ing Ebay Toggle

so - I took a flier on a Toggle - F4 on ebay.

It arrived today - with a LOT more plating loss than I thought, and the adjuster stops at 4

PLUS the adjuster does not move the blade AT ALL. Even though it clicks, it doesnt move the head....

and then I look closer, and the toggle mechanism is held to the razor with a bit of toothpick!

I took it apart and the receiver end of the toggle - that runs up to the blade bed - is nearly rusted away... if I could get it working, it would likely not last long. I need a piece of brass rod to try and thread in there.

Scottydoint - you had a bad experience with this seller - which I noticed AFTER I closed the deal....

he has given me back half my money, so live and learn, I guess.

Toggles are mechanically complex and their adjustment mechanisms are prone to failure IMHO. I got one bargain toggle that had a frozen adjustment mechanism. I later spent a pretty penny for a near mint cased toggle that did not appear to ever be used.

I know! I didn't think they could rust until recently. I keep seeing pictures of rusty razors. Inside the butterfly doors and underneath the head especially.

Hmnnn...
Isn't that where the blades go?
Mostly carbon blades?

Just playin'

i cant see the adjustments on my toggle, but i can feel it in the shave,
lather up, and adjust it while shaving,

the toggle adjustment doesnt move the blade in the same way as fatboy or slim, l

+1

the toggle adjustment don´t move the blade plate, only the gap was changed with adjustment. The Red Dot Fatboy works on the same way:

Hmmm. I've been wanting a toggle for a long time but never bid on one. So now it looks like buyer beware. That's OK. For now my interest is into open combs.

It is harder to tell when the adjuster is working than on a Fat Boy. It was not until I got a working toggle that I was sure that my first one was not working 100%.

That is not rust from the razor that you are seeing. It is rust from carbon steel blades. In every case it can be cleaned off the razor. You may also be confusing brassing with rust. Brassing occurs when the nickel, chromium, rhodium, silver or gold plate wears away and the underlying brass shows through.

If he didn't offer you a full refund and considering you know someone else who has had a bad experience, PLEASE help everyone else and leave a NEGATIVE FEEDBACK!!!!
He cannot leave a negative for you. Ebay did away with sellers leaving "REVENGE" feedback

+1. Less than forthright sellers should certainly receive appropriate negative feedback.

Sorry for the burn, dude. Since you have it all apart, I am guessing you might have lubed it up pretty well. If not, consider giving the thing a nice minderal oil soak in a tupperware container. It might lube up some of the sticky parts.

This sort of stuff happens alllllll the time on the Bay. I am having a dust up with a guy who sold me a Norfolk. There is a dent in the case on the back (see photo). It wasn't in the listing photos or description. Seller claims he was unaware, but look at that thing. Some Ebay sellers act like saying "see photos" or describing something as being in "good vintage condition" is sufficient cover for non-disclosure of obvious defects not shown in photos or mentioned in the listing. The list of questions one would need to ask in order to drill down to the real condition of the item is quite lengthy, but asking is always a good idea. Then, sometimes when you give the seller a chance and they fail to make it right, you leave feedback and they respond saying something like "Buyer tried to extort money by threatening me with negative feedback. I will not be extorted!"

Thank goodness we have a great resource for vintage razors: our fellow members.

what is the BFD with the toggle again?

and what part (by name) rusts?

IMO, the Toggle is the high water mark in DE razor design. That, and the fact that it is relatively rare, make it a desirable item. I find it unfathomable that there would be rustable metal in the inner parts.

That is too bad, I dodged a bullet on that one. I thought that one had paypal protection. Did you happen to use paypal to pay? Also, I have bought other things, Armani figures to be exact for my mom, which are worthless if they are chipped what not. I ask many questions, and then save all the emails that ebay autoresponds with for recourse against these sellers. With the exception of having to go to the factory with one All-clad item, this backup has always worked well for me. That listing claimed that the razor was functional and everything worked. The seller is an absolute liar if it arrived in teh condition you described. Sorry you got burned.

Also, great avatar. My old man had all the Herb Alpert albums and Whipped cream was my favorite cover! Ahh, it was great to grow up in the sixties. Even at like 6 years old I didn't know why I liked it, I just knew I DID!
