1st experience with the Feather blade

A historical moment today. After ploughing alphabetically through some sampler blade packs, the 'F' came in sight. So today I met the blade so many people here on B&B discuss. And wow, what an experience to shave with this blade. The Feather is really something different.

I was very happy to have been able to study the experience of fellow shavers with the Feather. In this way I managed to avoid some of the mistakes people tend to make with this blade.

Whereas in general I find shaving with a safety razor very satisfying and achieve the desired ‘BBS’ result, the Feather (in a Feather portable) gave me an ultra ultra BBS result. Amazing. As my beard is not too heavy, I almost had no sensation of shaving while using the Feather. Like a knife through warm butter! With the locations I usually find hardest to work on (my chin and under my nose) I had no problem at all. The hair vanished like magic! ;-) The Feather is an unforgiving blade. The few small nicks I got from it I can attribute to my own clumsiness (ZERO pressure! ;-)

I am curious what more the blade samplers have to offer, but the Feather blade is really an eye-opener and will definitely be a regular blade in my shaving routine.

I have two or three boxes of Feathers.. black.

I haven't tried them yet. I am about six weeks into shaving with DE's and technique is, well, pretty good... no irritation, nicks, nips or weeps. Been using Derby's, Persona Red, Lord's.. and gave the freebie Merkur one shave before ditching it.

I not afraid of the Feather, just want to know my technique is good and it's consistent if only to eliminate the variables before taking a test drive with one of the blades.

I know. The Feather blade is so great that sometimes you end up mixing words.
Just kiddin'. :biggrin1:

It is indeed a different beast. I remember the first time I tried the Feather. It cuts closer than any blade I tried so far and with great ease.
But I can only shave from time to time with it. Not for daily use. It's to volatile. But it does offer a shaving experience like no other!

I have the same sensation of "not shaving" with Feathers. No other blade I've tried gives quite the same sensation.

Glad to read you liked the Feathers. They are always in my top 3. You might enjoy trying a Kai.

Again, my experience with the Feather blade this morning was as good as on monday. Today I managed to apply even less pressure on my Feather portable, so apart from one minor nick, smooth face only, no damage... ;-)

A few months ago I had never thought that vintage shaving could be such an adventure. So tomorrow I will have a look in my sampler pack for the next challenge!

I'd like to second just about everything said here about Feathers.

They are the only blade I used and due to the toughness of my beard (especially on my upper lip), the only blades I can get halfway decent results with, and I've tried a few different brands, such as Iridiums and Blue Birds. My only complaint about Feathers is that a new blade gives me one perfect shave, but after that the quality of my shaves decline precipitiously with each additional use.

Perhaps the freakishly short life Feathers enjoy in my razor is more a function of the toughness of my beard than any shortcoming with the blades, but those have been my results. Consequently, I simply change blades after every use.

The way I use them, Feathers may be a bit costly, but the quality of my shaves are worth every penny.

I recently started my DE experience with Feathers (not knowing any better, was given on the advice of the shop where I bought my Merkur).

It's been a bit of a steep learning curve (going on four weeks now), and I'm certainly improving every shave. However, I do notice a bit of irritation if I shave every day.

I'm thinking of trying a new blade and was wondering if a less aggressive blade might be a bit less irritating.

Any suggestions of what I should sample next? Will probably pick up a sampler pack soon.

Thoughts?

Don
