What's new

Let's see your bird pictures!

When I got up this morning I heard something squeaking and saw the cat had something in his mouth. I thought it was a mouse and yelled at him to get it outside. He let go and something tiny flew out and into the corner behind some furniture. I shooed the cat out of the room and looked to see what it was. Here's what I found.

A female Ruby-Throated Hummingbird. She looked a little beaten up, but seemed more or less OK. I was letting her rest and trying to figure out how to get her back outside. When she noticed one of the other cats and freaked out, took off, and slammed into a couple walls, then just fell to the floor. I picked her up, she was breathing very hard and looked like she may even be seizing. I put her in an old ice cream tub with some holes cut in the lid and put her in a quiet corner. I didn't take any pics as I thought it was going to end badly. She just laid there on her side rapidly breathing tongue hanging out. I checked back every 10 min or so, still breathing, but just laying there. After about an hour when I checked she was standing up looking around! Another 10 min and she was trying to fly. I didn't want her to beat herself up any more so I took her outside and opened the lid.
P1030932.JPG

Half of her tail feathers (left side) are missing and at least one from her right wing.
P1030939.JPG

But that didn't slow her down too much.

In all the excitement I forgot to zoom I had 140mm available, but shot at 19! Micro 4/3 sensor so double those numbers for full frame equivalent. Here's a very heavily cropped and processed close up.

So happy she made it! :001_smile
Really need to put a bell on that cat!

These little guys have taken up residence on our front porch. Very quick, no look photo (nest is about 8 ft. up). Mom and Dad weren't happy with me being so close.

^^^Well done Soren^^^

Below: "Eye See You". This is a Wren (?) on our deck. I am really liking my new Canon 100mm f2.8 macro IS. The image stabilization makes it worth the price of admission. Handheld (above my head), f11, 1/30th. Full frame on bottom.

WOW!

Great rescue!

And chronicle!

Pamela Anderson would be proud!

Long time, no post!!
New kit arrived today, new wildlife lens amongst the stuff, Sigma 156-600 f5-6.3 C

Slapped it on the D800 and went for a stroll.

All handheld, was messing about with aperture, iso and shutter to see what it can do.

Very happy with the results for the first go with the new lens!!

Thanks guys!
The Sigma has exceeded my expectations so far, maybe it's the technique as well!:tongue_sm

I was looking at the the Sigma Contemporary and Sport 150-600mm, Nikon 200-500mm and Tamron 150-600mm VC something something!

Couldn't find a local shop that had a Tamron to try, so that fell back down the list for a while.
As I handhold a lot of shots and wander about, I felt the Sport was too heavy after giving it a try in a shop, 2.8kg plus the D800 body is a fair bit of kit to use handheld for a long period.

The Nikon 200-500 was a nice lens, but when I tested it alongside the Sigma C, I couldn't see a difference in image quality to be honest, maybe pixel peeping might produce differences, but I'm not really into that. The AF seemed a little snappier on the Sigma as well, plus it has the USB dock to fine tune it and apply custom settings, and it's about £450 cheaper so it seemed an easy choice!

Great pics! And if you enjoy birds, and appreciate tongue-in-cheek humor, there is a two-book series I think a lot of us in this sub-sub forum would like. I guess commercial endorsements are a no-no (for good reason) so I'll just give the name and you can google it. I have no affiliation. These are just books my family bought decades ago, and I think they are hilarious: "A Field Guide to Little-Known and Seldom-Seen Birds of North America" and the sequel.

Thanks @TrimBeard! I'll check out the book you mentioned.

I went out with the Sigma 150-600mm today, decided to the try the 1.4x converter on it.

Heron in his usual spot! 850mm, iso 2000, 1/2000s, f9.

First bird in flight attempt!! Only saw it last second, so just about had time to point the camera skywards.
Sparrowhawk I believe. Both shot at 650mm, iso 1000, 1/1600s, f8.

Happy with that against a bright featureless sky, definitely some potential in the 150-600mm + 1.4x converter!
You do lose a little AF speed and will only get opened up to f9 fully zoomed, so I had to bump the iso to keep a decent shutter speed, no crazy iso numbers though, fine on the D800, but could be an issue if your camera doesn't handle higher iso too well.

Great, especially the hawk in flight. I love raptors. I saw a huge hawk in my neighbors tree the other day. He was in to deep to get a good pic (very thick tree, blocks a lot of light), though.

Thanks @oc_in_fwThese Sparrowhawks are quite small, still look impressive up there though!

A few more from yesterday with the 150-600mm + 1.4x converter.
All handheld between 410-550, iso 1000, 1/1600s, f8

Really pleased, but some were not pin sharp, maybe I'm expecting too much? I'll do some test pics from a tripod soon and check the focus anyway.
