2019 Shave Purchase Sabbatical - The Maltese Falcon Razor

After almost exactly 100 shaves, I have finished the WSP Formula T Mahagony. It is the first full-size soap I've finished since moving away from canned goo. I am planning on moving on to Stirling Iced Coffee. The only thing I am trying to decide is if I want to 3017 the soap or if I want to remove a quarter of it to change soaps sooner.

I have settled in and am not overly interested in too much. That said, It is highly possible that I will be going out in the near future. SWMBO is on the warpath to make our bathroom more organized. This might mean spending money on some storage solutions which would put me out. Time will tell, however, between internet challenge and wife, she will win.

I submit that buying bathroom storage solutions is not a disqualifying event. The moment the sabbatical rules conflict with marital peace is the moment we should all assess our priorities...

Fortunately for me, as my wife is the boss, she handles storage solutions. Any money spent on this issue is hers, not mine (though we're in a community property state), so it's not my problem, and not disqualifying. I find my own ways to get disqualified.

Put the items in temporary store outside the bathroom till 1st Jan 2020 then review the position; keeps you in the sabbatical.

Hi,

Hmmm. Maybe I have the answer. She picks out buys the storage and shoves it at you. That way you didn't spend the money. Not quite as nice as her buying you a new razor for a gift, but you get to stay in.

I eliminated another item off of my hit list - Clubman Citrus Musk aftershave. I'll miss it, it's one of the few Clubman products I'm willing to buy.

Still in. Fatboy on 6 SOTD, lovely with a Nacet.

Im out! I heard the siren song and was entranced by its beauty! I was doing so well and even selling off some of my razors, but then this came along...

I’ll be back in next year for sure and I’ll join the monthly challenge just to keep me in line.

Now I have to hide this from my wife!

Just my opinion and I'm not even in this thing, but I can't see how bathroom storage would put you out. Nor how being a part of picking it out would disqualify you either. You should be able to pick out your bathroom cabinets. Kinda like if the water heater went out and needed to be replaced or if you added a water softener to your home. Yes, these items would benefit your shaving experience but that's not the sole reason that you'd own them. These are household items. Even some general storage bins that aren't shaving specific items should be ok in my opinion, even if you use them to store your shaving gear. Maybe more of a grey area, but to push the envelope, I'd say the same deal with some dice to track your shaves. Maybe I'm a bit more forgiving but my rule of thumb would be if you relisted these items for sale later on they would they be listed as shaving items? Anything that you'd post as a shaving related item would knock you out.

Well...looks like we have more out than in at this point. Looks like 51% out and 49% in.
Good luck to the remaining! Your work is cut out for you finishing the last 5 months!

My understanding is you’re out when you say you’re out. But the rule is spending nothing on shave related goods—this includes collectables, wall hangings, new storage solutions, etc. it’s funny you brought up a water heater because someone called themselves out on that a few years ago so it’s regularly a TIC example.

I agree that no one should allow their participation in the sabbatical cause problems with their spouse. This is just for fun and their are no prizes at the end. What many learn is that despite our best intentions, a year is a long time to go without spending money on our hobby and sometimes people are out for silly things like forgetting a travel razor or a spouse telling them they have to buy something to arrange all the stuff that’s been collected. When that happens we bow out gracefully and try again next year if we had fun with the challenge.

Ironically what I find myself listing over these past few days cost less than $5. Menthol liquid or crystals for aftershaves... This summer has me really enjoying the couple splashes I do have with menthol and wishing I could add more.

I won’t be going out over it. Overall, probably a good thing that I’m only wishing I had the crystals rather than wanting new soaps or splashes that already have it added. The sabbatical continues to pay off in both monetary value and personal growth!

I'd be happy to send you some crystals.

Still in.
We went to an antique / flea market joint while camping last week. Gillette Adjustable in case with cleanout brush and blade tuck, $15. I admired it, smiled, and put it back down.
Like I said, still in. Somewhat reluctantly though.

#90 Checking in, an happy to report I've another empty bottle of aftershave.
Finished off my VIBR over the weekend, but fortunately I have a stash of other Bay Rums. Currently working on a bottle of Layrite #9....and it smells good!

My tally:
