They Don’t Understand

Who here has relatives or friends who cannot understand your interest in this hobby? I have a close friend who is a great guy but he is baffled by my interest in wet shaving. He thinks that using a de razor is archaic and silly. And dangerous too. We have a back and forth argument about it. He thinks that cartridges are superior but I often tell him that I’m saving so much money in the long run... with the cheap price of blades. Also I share with him how using a brush with a good quality soap or cream is an awesome experience. Unfortunately he still doesn’t get it...🤨🤨🧐

It comes down to ones priorities and how much weight they put in different things. I value a close, comfortable shave and the general health of my face far more than the few minutes I'd save using cartridge. Your friend, it would seem, does not. .

People say learn to love the little things. I'm this regard I've been successful in that something that used to be a chore is now something I very much look forward to. To say nothing of the therapeutic aspect wetshaving provides me. I hope I can do the same with other aspects of my life.

YMMV etc

None of my friends and relatives including my wife and kids really understand it and that’s cool.

When someone tells me I am crazy for spending $100 on a razor or $150 on a shaving brush, I just ask them how much they lost at the casino, how much they spent at the bar, why they need a $2000 Canali suit when they can buy one at TJ Max for $99, etc. Everyone has different interests.

I enjoy the hobby aspect of wetshaving and my family accepts the fact that I want nice shaving gear. As long as the bills are paid, kids are fed and we are saving money for a rainy day, there are worse things I could be doing!

The opposite! Just a couple weeks ago I gave my neighbor a Gillette Slim, a three piece zamak and the Futur clone. And a hundred Dorco Primes.

And he is now a happy guy! Still using canned foam, though.

His favorite disposable was discontinued. Didn't want to pay Mach 7 prices.

More Deep Thoughts than Jack Handy
I'd venture a guess, that most guys simply use a disposable or a cartridge type razor and call it a day. And more than likely, most guys are happy with that setup. I never was happy with that setup and started looking around for something that didn't make my face and neck look like a bad, bloody rash. I found it in double edge wet shaving. And once you realize that it can be better...you start to chase the "how much better can it get?" Better known as the 'rabbit hole.'

Only a few of my friends ''kinda'' understand why i'm doing it and they mostly look at me as a collector of old vintage razors, but I don't think I can change their minds to throw the cartridges and try something else. Some people think i'm crazy for talking about this and they find it like i'm trying to teach them how to wipe their butts or take a shower a bit better and I rarely talk to most of my friends about this subject anymore. Most of my friends feel kinda empty and they have either very common intrests (like sports, fitness/workout and cars) and hobbies or none at all.

You said saving money 😂. Not a chance. How many razors, brushes and blades do you have? If you can honestly say you’re saving money, then you haven’t actually been doing this as a hobby. But don’t worry, you can still spend too much. It gets us all.

I'm a very lucky man. I don't share "my shaving stuff" with any of my male friends, as it's a personal thing for
me to enjoy on my own. But I do share my happiness with my wife (our 25th. anniversary is coming up in May),
who constantly encourages me and supports me to "buy great shaving things" and enjoy our magnificent hobby.

I even gave a couple of vintage (not expensive) razors and some soap and a cheap Badger brush to a couple of guys.
I quit trying to talk about it to them. It falls on deaf ears.

No I haven’t saved money if I consider all the products I’ve bought. Maybe I could have saved money if I’d gone into all of this as a minimalist. It will take some years before I break even.

Son looks like he should be in ZZ Top or on Duck Dynasty.

Gave my nephew a RazoRock DE1 razor, bunch of Astra SP blades, AP Shave Co. Elegant Emerald brush w/24mm Synbad knot and Hasslinger Schaufmilch soap. He loves traditional shaving, is eager to try more shaving stuff and to learn more. :)

I had much the same experience, folks not really understanding the appeal of DE shaving which is fine. This was the game changer for me: I taught myself to use a straight razor. It was from watching geofatboy on youtube. Took a month on and off but I got the hang of it. From that time on the response was different. Eyebrows would go up, "Whoa... you mean the razor that unfolds?"
