What's new

You're going to the Pasteur Pharmacy...

...and just what the heck do you do?

What do you do? Do you shoot the hostage?

I will be there next week. Should I do one of each aspect of shaving? A pre-shave, soap/cream, aftershave, balm...or load up on just one awesome thing?

Hardware or software?

I am conservative by inclination. So...Taylor's of Old Bond Street? What? I am at a crossroads.

Just go there and look around. No need to rush. Enjoy the variety.

I fear that I'm a man of modest means.

For example, it is 11:35 and I'm in my driveway listening to Mott the Hoople in my pickup truck.

I have no desire to stop.

My knowledge of NYC consists of The French Connection, Wolfen, Warriors, Serpico, The Godfather, and Ghostbusters.

What you learned in the Godfather, Parts I and II only (Part III doesn't really exist) is all you need to know about NYC. I too am of modest means. I've been there twice. Bought nothing the first time. I was completely overwhelmed. The second time I walked out with a couple small things. Don't even remember now. My suggestion is to come up in your head with some stuff you'd like to have in the way of soaps and/or creams. When you go, just spend some time sniffing them. If you find something you like, buy it. Same thing with aftershaves. Not knowing your den I can't know what you might need. Is there a razor you've been eyeing? They may have it. Same for brushes. One thing though. Because it's a brick and mortar store, prices are going to be a little higher than what you might see on the internet. What do you get for that higher price? Immediate gratification. The next time I go I'm going to spend some time sniffing. I really haven't done that yet there. I'm fairly scent oriented so that would give me the opportunity to zero in on a scent that I've been looking for. Enjoy and happy hunting. You may already know this but there are two Pasteur's stores. The one on 34th Street is the larger of the two and has more stuff. That's the one you want to go to. And enjoy the city while you're there as well. If you like jazz, there is always someone worth seeing at the many clubs in town. Have fun.

just go into it not so much thinking or worrying about what to buy...but more of what you'll get a chance to test and smell. As soon as you walk in along the right side at knee level you can spend alotta time crouching and shuffling. lined up one after another, easy to unscrew and speed sniff thru, unsealed, unboxed- are dozens of tubs and bottles of Stirling, Fine testers, M&M, B&M, and razorock. The razorock aftershaves are particularly easy to open and sniff a bunch right in a row. at chest height are the higher top end brands, and colognes.

When you get to the wall of Proraso you're sort of in the center hub of the store, you can spin around in a full circle and all the aisle endcaps have more shaving gear, MWF, Brut, Tabac, A&E, Speick, Valobra, Cremo, lots of different blades , brushes, bowls, scuttles, stands, accessories, etc. . And the sale racks marked with a small handwritten note, all that stuff is older, discontinued, marked pretty cheap.

Further along after the Proraso you'll find TOBS, Cella, Wilkinson, Lea, Arko & Derby sticks, Palmolive, La Toja, boxes of Haslinger pucks. Also check the center aisle by the modern foams and carts, they have stuff in there like Aqua Velvas, Williams pucks and Nivea sticks.

Maybe set a budget. Or only bring a certain amount of cash like going to a casino. Or do what i do. Go in get a green basket and go crazy. Smelling scents before buying i believe is saving money in the long run. Also check the sale racks. Usually 50% off. One time at the smaller one the woman gave me buy 2 get one free on the sale stuff. In any event please post after you return. Have fun!

Wow. I wish you luck and I hope you have the time of your life. I don't think I could have the discipline not to buy too much there.

This.

If you don't want to spend a fortune, decide ahead of time how much you are willing to spend, and take it in cash. Buy whatever you want that doesn't exceed the cash limit you set and brought with you to the store.

It's a win-win.

Yeah, for the most part, I'd probably just smell a bunch of stuff and take some good notes. Just about everything you can buy there you can easily purchase online at a later time. Still, do pick something up to remember your trip by, at least one item. Be it a soap, aftershave or maybe even a brush.

What I bought would likely depend on the trip, who I was with, and where I was coming from. For example, I might opt for a more expensive brush if I were taking a trip to Europe with my wife. It's a larger priced item that I could look at fondly every time I used it for many years after the trip and remember what a great time I had. I bought my wife a bottle of expensive perfume in Venice and every time she wears it she remembers how awesome that vacation was.

If I lived a state or two away and it was a long weekend kind of thing, or maybe a business trip, a soap or aftershave would probably be more than sufficient.

Sale items might get you to rethink this plan but do be selective as the most expensive items are the ones you buy and don't use. So, regardless of the price do give some though to what you purchase, and only purchase the items that you absolutely love.

"All the Young Dudes," "All the Way From Memphis," "Honaloochie Boogie," "Roll Away the Stone,"
“Angel of Eighth Avenue,” "One of the Boys," ...... You mean that Mott the Hoople ? LOL !
I wonder if Mick Ronson and Ian Hunter enjoyed shaving as much as we all do !
