Your help needed - razor head weight compendium

What I'm hoping to collect here is the empty head weights of the various DE razor heads that are out there. With the ongoing interest in after-market handles - it seems logical that we would have a compendium of actual razor head weights that may help others out there to better match various handles with various heads to achieve what they may be looking for in regards to balance, pressure needed to shave comfortably, ease of use, etc...

In any event, please add whatever you have - cut and paste this as needed and continue the thread using an alphabetical order.

I am weighing mine with a Cuisinart digital scale - no blade - no handle - head only.

Here's what I have on hand.

Head weights – no blade – no handle:

Edwin Jagger DE89: 30 grams
Fatip Piccolo: 29 grams
Feather AS-D1: 29 grams
Gillette New OC Long Tooth: 32 grams
Gillette Tech Triangle Slot: 25 grams
iKon OSS: 28 grams
iKon S3S: 63 grams
Muhle R41 Grande: 26 grams
New York Shaving Mariner: 29 grams
Tradere OC: 49 grams
Weber DLC: 32 grams

Muhle R41 29g and another one 27g
Muhle R89 29g
Merkur 23C 29g
Fatip 29g
Parker 3 piece (45/48/91R) 29g
merkur 25c 24g

Almost all stick to the 29g's. Funny coincidence.

Tony - you want to check that Muhle R41 again? I just re-weighed mine and it's 26 grams. It's a 2012 model (which is the same as the 2011). Is yours a 2011 or newer? Or the older 2010 design?

Give us some weights Alex...you must have enough in your collection to finish this whole thing up in one post!

I re-weighted mine, It was still 29g and I have another too (from grande) and it was 27 g. I added those on my first post.
Edit: forgot to mention that mine is late model ie. 2011.

This is interesting. Probably has to do with engineering tolerances, with anything machine manufactured, theres always a target and max and min tolerances for quality control purposes. I would suggest making a range of weights for each razor to make it more accurate maybe "Muhle R41 26g-29g" or you could just take the average of all the recorded weights of each razor. Could also just be a slight difference in the scales. Too many people using too many different scales. either way its gonna be hard to get an exact number without asking the manufacturer for their target weights.

Great Idea though! I like head heavy razors so this'll be a great resource!

Here are a few that I had handy this morning:

  • Gillette Old Type Pocket Edition, silver (1909): 21g
  • Gillette Old Type Brownie, nickel (post-patent): 21g
  • Gillette New Improved Tuckaway, silver (1927): 32g
  • Gillette NEW DeLuxe Red & Black, gold (post merger): 37g
  • Gillette Tech, gold (non-triangular, NDC): 26g
  • Probak, gold: 18g

And all scales have their own tolerances. When working in a chemical fatory as a research assistant we calibrated scales once a month. Home usage scales have bigger differencies and tolerances. Small and light objects like razor heads accuracy levels could vary significantly.
Great thead though.

For most razors I think variation of more than a half gram is probably due to scale calibration, not manufacturing. My gram scale is uncalibrated, but here are some numbers for comparison. Unless stated all Gillettes are USA.

Gillette ca. 1930 Tuckaway-style NEW Deluxe 34.7-g
Gillette ca. 1930 Tuckaway-style Lady NEW Deluxe 34.7-g
Gillette ca. 1935 red-black set NEW Deluxe 35.6-g (compare to Porter's 37-g)
Gillette ca. 1935 NEW Deluxe 35.8-g (compare to Porter's 37-g)
Gillette long-comb NEW Canada patents pending 29.9-g
Gillette short-comb NEW patents 32.1-g
Gillette long-comb NEW UK no patents 27-g
Gillette Tech P-2 20.5-g
Merkur 45 8.1-g
Mühle R89 29.8-g
Mühle R41tc 26.7-g
Mühle "R99" Fa tip 29.5-g
Probak (zinc? and chrome?) 18.4-g
Stahly registered US patent office 29.2-g

Let me know if you want help getting this data into a wiki page.
