Your Feedback on Martin de Candre Fougère Shaving Soap Scent

Martin de Candre clearly wants customer feedback on the scent of their new fougère shaving soap.

In my opinion, they have hit a home run with the new scent, which is very pleasant straight from the jar: green, warm and fresh. As others have noted, the citrus itself is hard to discern, but whatever it is, it's very nice! The scent coming from the lather is pleasant, but I wouldn't mind if it were a little stronger.

I hope that this product becomes a regular offering and that its scent is not in any way diminished.

I do not intend to provide feedback directly to MdC because so many people seem to like it that my input would be unfair. I am truly disappointed that the scent is not like the bath bar. I smell citrus, I do not like citrus, and I have no intention of buying any.

I'm of somewhat the same mind but with the qualifier that I did not find the citrus overpowering or intrusive (your nose may vary) but I was really hoping for the same experience as with the sample bar. Now, John's sample bath bar wasn't "in your face" strong but had a different scent profile, whereas my bar had a closer profile but was way, way stronger. Think back to those threads earlier in the year of people commenting on how they could smell it from another room - not always in a good way based on some poster's comments, LOL!

So, I would be happy if they made it the same but stronger. As long as you're asking of course!

I am very pleased with the scent of the new fougere shave soap.
I have and dislike the smell of the bath soap so I was apprehensive about buying the shave soap.
I really lucked out. I love the new shave soap even more than the original scented one and will probably re-order the foug instead of the original as long as they continue to produce it.

I hope I can get a jar of their second batch because missed the first one. If the scent on this new LE is anywhere close to their fougere bath soap, it's already a winner for me.

This is what I mean by stating it's a"mellow" scent in comparison to the soap bar. I'm in my study and from fifteen feet away I can smell the Fogure soap strongly while comparatively three Mdc jars (two opened one being the lavender and then other Fogure) barely escape the bathroom when I walk by. Now having been away from home for several days I went back to smelling the jar of Fogure and will say it's almost on par with the regular scented Mdc but less so. In conclusion if your looking for that powerful soap scent you'll be disappointed. If your ok with a little less octane then get it. Wonderful stuff! I'll be a regular customer for life if they keep making this.

I agree completely. I think if the shaving soap were as strong as the bath soap it would be overwhelming. The scent is far from mellow in my mind. In fact, I'm hard pressed to come up with any of the 30 soaps I own that are nearly as strong. Well, other than tabac and arko, if that's a good thing

Agree. I could stand more scent if they put it in, but the amount they have is plenty and considerably more powerful than all my other soaps.

Yup. Agree with your description:green and fresh. Milder than the original perfumed version, which I don't mind really. On top of it, I find its lather particularly creamy, protective, slick. I do like it.

This was the one I was hoping for. It could be a tiny bit stronger in scent, but not too much. I'm completely satisfied with it, and am very appreciative of MdC for accommodating our request. If my supply runs out I'll definitely buy more!

Does anyone know if the reference to batches and availability only applies to mail order? Only I am planning to take drive down there next week (sorry, /smug git/ off) and it would be a disaster if I got there and they had none...

That's an interesting question. If you are able to email them and ask, they may have some for in-store sales, and they might even put one back with your name on it if they know you're coming. That sounds very exciting. Good luck!

Not to derail the thread, but what AS do you think complements this soap nicely? Yesterday I tried some PdP, which goes wonderfully with the regular MdC, but I feel this soap deserves something closer

I find the new Fougere scent to be remarkably similar to the regular MdC. When I sniff them side by side I can tell the difference, but on its own the new guy definitely betrays his roots. No mistaking the house style of MdC.

I like the scent of the bath bar much more. While I agree that the scent of the soap is strong, the scent of the Fougere fragrance itself isn't very strong, if that makes sense. To my nose, it doesn't really smell much like the bath bar at all.

When I had my sample of the bath bar, I would look forward to walking into the bathroom and getting hit with a big whiff of it.

I get a much lighter citrusy scent that has a strong anise/black licorice scent to it that is off putting for me. I don't know if it's a result of the Fougere oil blend mixing with the shaving soap base as opposed to the bath soap base or what.

The performance is fantastic, but I don't see this one staying in my den.



I like the original MdC much better.
