What's new

Yesterday was a sad day...

I discovered that I no longer love the smell of Tabac. What happened? I used to love it, but now I hate it. To me it just plain stinks now. I lathered up yesterday and at first I was rewarded with the familiar scent that I used to love but as I was building my lather it turned nasty. It's done this the last several lathers. Either I just don't like Tabac anymore or my puck has gone bad. The puck is almost used up but there's no way it's going to be finished now. It just smells too nasty. I guess that's it. I'm off the Tabac wagon.

Welcome to the club. I normally don't care what a soap smells like as long as it performs. However, Tabac is the one exception. The only way I can use it is to add some cream or some something to attempt to mask the scent.

The only soap I had go bad, scent-wise, was a sample of Cella I forgot about. My Tabac puck has to be at least 2 years old and I haven't noticed any change in the scent except that it's not as strong as it used to be. I still like Tabac, but Harris and La Toja are higher on my favorites list.

I got a tube of Tabac shaving cream from a shop that probably does not have much foot traffic. Was like lathering with a dirty ashtray. I guess this stuff will go stale??
Anyone else experience anything similar?

Put the remains of your puck in a ziplok bag and try it again when the cooler weather comes along. To me, Tabac is perfect in winter.

Sorry to hear you've gone off of Tabac. It still rings the bell for me after 3 years. It may be the weather, though. I've put mine away until Fall.

I had this experience with a tube of cream from India (can't remember the brand; it was not Godrej). Smelled exactly like cigarette ash.

Tabac was my first "Wow" soap and for a long time the strong, distinctive aroma triggers all the part of my mind that said - "great lather, excellent shave". Since that time I discovered other "Wow" soaps, Palmolive, MWF and more recently Mystic Waters and MIke's Natural.

So my Tabac has not seen as much use, but I know next fall as the weather cools, we'll reacquaint with each other again and it will be a grand time.

Sorry to hear that, you were such a ardent fan. The good news is there are a bunch really good soaps on the market. Have fun searching for your next #1 soap.

+1 ... Tabac is at its best in C-c-c-old weather. It is the backbone of my rotation from October through March. I've tried it in the middle of summer, and its just not the same.

If your puck is 2 years old, you might want to retire it and start with a fresh one for next winter. My first puck of Tabac lasted me 3 years, and I had enough left over for a nice PIF, but I wasn't shaving every day, and I had a lot of other soaps and creams to choose from. But towards the end, although it never got to smelling bad, it did slowly change color and consistency over time.
