What's new

Xmas Shaving order- need help drawing it up

Christmas is coming soon and my wife asked me to give her a list of shaving items that I want and she will get them over the internet.

I began DE shaving in early October of this year. So I'm new at this DE shaving game, but quite like it.

As a result of being new I'm asking for some advice from those with more experience.

I like my razor very much...a Muhle R 89. Beautiful instrument. Works very well.

I've tried all the different blade makes in my blade sampler.

The sampler included...Astre, Derby, Merkur, Wilkinson, Feather, Personna, Gillette.

All were fine, but the ones I like the best and will probably order a large supply before Xmas, include:

  • Feather
  • Personna
  • Gillette 7 0'Clock (Green pack)

Shaving soaps / creams / Gels :

I've tried Creamo Cream, Baxter's of California, Gillette Gel and Proraso Shaving Soap - green puck. All have their pluses and minus(s)....but the one I like best is...... Proraso Shaving Soap (Green puck).

I've only used one brush. It's an Omega Boar Brush (wooden handle)...it cost me about $ 14. Seems to work well, but maybe that's only because I've had no experience with any other brush and don't know what I'm missing.

Bowl- I use an old stainless steel, cereal bowl that was designed for camping...but it really seems to work well for brushing up a lather.

Any suggestions for shaving supplies and equipment, for my Xmas order ?

Thank you.

I would say try a good badger hair brush. I started out a year ago with an Omega Badger brush, which cost me about $24. I really liked my brush, until I got a Rooney 1/1 http://www.vintagebladesllc.com/vshop/xcart/home.php?cat=153. What a difference! The Rooney is very dense yet soft, in comparison the Omega now seems very "floopy". I get much better lather from the Rooney, and it feels really good on my face.

How about aftershaves? There's many excellent products available that are a treat to your face. I'm partial to alcohol-based splashes, but if you have extremely sensitive skin, you might want to try an aftershave balm instead.

Take a look at the Aftershave Reviews section of B&B for many great selections. I'm currently enjoying Alt-Innsbruck, Tabac, Speick, and Swiss Pitralon, but that's probably because I just came back from Europe! Your choices are almost limitless.

Good choice on the feathers. Personnas nice blade for many but lacks the smoothness for me. As for soaps, try some more Italian ones like Cella and Valobra. For the price they can't be beaten in my opinion. :thumbup1:

My wife and I have done this for years. We set up folders on the computer with links to what we'd like (shaving or otherwise) so that whatever we order off the list is something each of us want. Shave-wise, I go for a good badger brush. Last year a Rooney, this year a Simpson Colonel. Creams and blades are like getting soap and toothpaste for Christmas. I can buy them any time. They're necessities, not luxuries. How about a nice scuttle to keep your lather warm?

SWMBO asked me what I wanted for Xmas but after 8 minutes of going through my list she tuned out... Seems I'm not allowed to have one of everything!

I'm new to DE shaving and my list includes :

Shaving stand
Badger brush
AS
Proraso pre shave cream
Soap

I have a good feeling that I'll be getting these as I ended up ordering most on line :biggrin1:

Definitely ask for a nicer brush, and you need to try out some higher-end soaps.
Most vendors offer free shipping above a certain minimum order, so I'd shoot for a mid-level brush and then top the order up with a variety of shave sticks and pucks.

I've tried many (my wife would say too many) products. The ones that I wouldn't want to do without are Speick ASL and MWF. I agree that a badger brush is something you would enjoy a great deal. I would recommend a Simpson in best badger hair. The other thing to consider is a vintage razor. A Superspeed or one of the Gillette open-comb razors are great. But to me, they were like Lays Potato Chips. I couldn't stop at just one. You may want to avoid this present or you are likely to come down with a major case of RAD>

I'd say its time to upgrade your brush. Some badgers can be found cheap or you can get ya some vintage handles and put in your own knots.
