What's new

Wow, a really bad post shave.

I had a really nice shave with Tabac and used my Merkur HD, after I was finished I rinsed my face with ice cold water and then put some Nivea post shave balm.

That is when my face felt like a 4 alarm blaze was set on it. I instantly got tons of red bumps and the fire would not go out for an hour.

***????

Nivea "sensitive" AS balm irritates my face too - but not to that extent. I go for alcohol based splashes now... I'd rather it burns the crap out of my face for a few seconds rather than irritate my skin for the next hour or more

This may be your shaving method.. balms are supposed to be soothing. Nivea.. especially so. Did you go against the grain when you shaved?

Nivea ESB burns if I get too close a shave. Actually, all ASBs do if it's a particularly bad shave. In those cases, I just put on Cornhuskers after an alcohol splash.

There are a number of nivea ASB's - You probably have one that says something like "cooling" on the bottle. I avoid this one as it contains alcohol and burns like the dickens and if im going to have an alcoholic burn might as well be with a splash rather than a balm that should be soothing. The "sensitive extra soothing" version does not burn and is quite calming to the skin.

Nivea PSB sensitive, made my face burn for 30 minutes too. So much for sensitive. Nothing else has done that. Gave it away . . .

Nivea Sensitive will burn if you are allergic to chamomile or one of the other ingredients in it.

Also, any face lotion or moisturizer will burn some if you've had too close a shave. Also, are you sure you "instantly" got the red bumps? What kind of bumps were they? Sometimes razor burn isn't apparent during the cold water rinse stage.

To be sure you're allergic to the Nivea, try some on the neck area where you shave after your face has recovered but before you shave next time. Let it sit there for a few minutes. If it starts tingling or burning then you're allergic to it.

Yeah, I use Nivea ASB probably 95% of the time I shave. Typically, I put on a strong alcohol-based AS (old spice, pinaud bay rum, etc), let it dry, then apply the ASB. The first one burns then the second one soothes. Never had a problem with it.

Exactly what I do 98% of the time, usually with La Toja/Floid/Pahana AS then Nivea ASB. Works great!

Darrell, I hope all that went wrong is shave irritation - Good luck!

Thanks for all the info guys. I don't know what else it could have been besides the balm. I did the exact same routine I do with every shave, but for some reason this one was bad news.

I was at work on Tuesday. Thats Monday night for you in USA. My face felt dry and tight. I walked over to store next to work and bought Nivea ASB, saw some odd ingredients and tried the sample bottle. Little dabble on my cheek. Nothing so I bought it.

Walked back to work and put it on. Holy crap it burned. My fellow teachers were at lunch and I asked one if my face was red. She just laughed. It was very red.

I shave at night, have been using AOS aftershave balm, unscented. Last night that kinda burned. I resorted to what I did for years. Washed of the ASB and used just cool(not cold) water on my face and neck for a few minutes by hand and pat dry with soft towel. felt much better. Today I was not as red as before.

i used to use aloe vera on my face and it was ok. Gonna try that again tonight.
