Would this have been a good score?

Hi everyone, I was watching this razor on eBay, and I had to forcibly tear myself away from it at the last minute (funds are a bit tight this month, and I'm technically saving for a Muhle R89…). I checked on mr-razor's site, and it seems to be authentic, although I'm not 100% sure about the seller's claims of it never having been used (missing cardboard insert, etc). It still seems to be in a very sweet condition, though.

Anyway, my evil side is having a tiny bit of "non-buyer's regret" at this point, so I'm just curious if this would have been a good score at this price?

A decent razor.:001_smile I don't see a case.slipper and instructions though.:confused1If it was a complete set I would say good score.:wink2:

I have a Gillette Tech and like it. The one in the ebay posting is in real nice condition, very shiny. But Techs are pretty common and decent ones are on the Buy, Sell, Trade forum for 10-12$ pretty often... I would not feel too bad about not getting that one.

There may be collectorish reasons for preferring a British Tech to an American one, but with shipping, that is certainly more than I would have been willing to pay. I did track some Techs on eBay recently, and I noticed that a lot of them seemed to be going now for more than I would have expected. Maybe just a fluke, maybe there's a spike in interest, or maybe I just don't know what I'm talking about.

I agree $25 shipped is on the very high side for a Gillette Tech. At that range, I would expect to see it with it's case/ original packaging. I honestly think you can score a better deal if you watch the B/S/T here.

I'm going to have a different take here just to stir things up. I'm not a big fan of "Is it worth it?" questions as price is determined by people what are willing to pay for a given supply. If you want it and think you would pay the asking price, then it's worth it. However, if you more concerned about getting a "score" then this question becomes a little more pertinent but then your motivation is entirely different as you are more after a "deal" than the object in question.

I remember years ago, we were buying a Cutlass Supreme for my mom. There was a option to have a luggage rack and it really looked good on the car and my mom liked it. However, my father in his infinite wisdom declared the rack "not worth it" and didn't get it despite my recommendation to purchase it. It's not like it would get a lot of use but it really looked nice with it installed. Well, my mom didn't enjoy driving the car as much and my dad was incredulous as to why. Duh! She didn't get what she wanted. For the sake of a few dollars and the "not worth it" proclamation, she drove car she didn't like as much. So, what's the point of spending a lot of money and still not be happy. My dad could have scored big brownie points had he spent a little more.

If money is not a means of getting what to you want, then I don't know what it is. I'm not advocating out-of-control spending but if you want something and have the money then, why not? Isn't your personal satisfaction worth it? As far as I'm concerned, if you can get something for under $20 bucks that can give you years of enjoyment, that's the best deal in town. Especially if it saves you hours of additional searching and bidding frustration. I don't see the logic of denying yourself if you have the funds and the desire. If you are broke and/or over budget, that's a different matter.

PS: If you are buying stuff because your are a shop-aholic, then this is advice isn't directed at you.

Never look back on ebay auctions, there will always be more razors. Even though it sold for $17, you never know what the other buyer's max bid was. It might have been double that. I recently picked up an unused '59 Tech with cardboard blade for $16 off ebay, so the price for this one was in the (ebay) ballpark for a Tech. B/S/T is still the place to try first if you have something specific in mind.

Thanks for all the comments, guys. You (and my wallet) have made me feel a lot better:302:
