it looks like I get consensus I need to treat it with oil to make sure it lasts longer.

I would contact the manufacturer as another member suggested and see what (if anything) was done to finish the scales, and if they have any recommendation. If the scales are raw then it would probably be best to give them a protective finish/treatment.
