Wingham Wool Works shipping optimization

I've been fiddling with Wingham's shipping to the US (I've been contemplating stocking up on MWF), and noticed the following:

  • 9 x MWF = 9.29 GBP shipping
  • 10 x MWF = 10.29 GBP shipping
  • 11 x MWF = 10.29 GBP shipping
  • 12 x MWF = 41.71 GBP shipping (!!!)

So shipping more than quadruples between 11 and 12 pucks of MWF, meaning that 11 pucks of MWF is the optimal number of soaps to order (shipping decreases per item up to 11 and dramatically increases afterwards). Ordering 11 pucks of MWF from WWW would therefore come out to about $8.11 per puck shipped to the US.

Anybody in Knoxville want to get together on some MWF?

Is their shipping pro-rated on price or weight?

I wonder if you'd get the same results if you ordered a mixture of products, instead of 11 of the same thing.

You do--I originally was messing around with MWF and MWF shampoo, and got the same jump between 5 of both and 6 of both and at 9 of the shave soap and 1 of the shampoo (I think). I'm guessing it must be based on weight, since that kind of price jump doesn't make any sense otherwise.

It could be based on the size of the box ... like the way USPS Priority mail jumps from $4.95 to $7.95 to $10.95.

It might also have something to do with the VAT, although shipping to the USA that shouldn't apply. Maybe its a big jump in a Customs or Tariff fee.

Still quadrupling the shipping by adding one more puck doesn't make a lot of sense.

As I recall, they allow you to remove the dreaded VAT by a coupon code. It might have been "non eu". Worth checking before you order.
Best prices on the fat that I've been able to find!

Good shopping!

yes, I checked and here it is from their website:

Non EC Orders

Customers ordering outside of the European Union are not liable to pay VAT. This will be deducted from the total. If you are using the online buying option please enter "NON EU" in the voucher box in order to calculate the correct price.

Hope this helps!

They have the best deal going on Wool Fat. I purchased the bath soap and a shaving soap refill for $14.65 shipped to New York.

I believe drastic jumps in shipping price have to do with going over a certain weight for a single package. I've played US shipping games at other UK and EU sites. 1kg is often a breaking point.
