Windows 7 vs. 8

Just replaced my burned out PC that had Windows XP for a new PC with Windows 8....Don't like it much, seems slow and more complicated rather than more simplified...is Windows 7 any better ,or worse ???

I prefer Windows 7, purely because I'm not a big fan of the new Metro interface. That being said, with Windows 8.1 you can opt to boot directly to the desktop thereby bypassing the start screen altogether. This, along with something like Start8 can make the experience a lot more like Windows 7, with the benefit of the changes under the hood that came with Windows 8.x.

I haven't used win 8. I use windows 7 at work and home, I like it better than XP.

Good suggestion to use Start8!

I replaced my computer back in February (Windows XP) and the new PC has Windows 8. I love it, especially the new Metro Interface. I wish I could get rid of the desktop which comes back by default everytime I close a programme. I want the Metro Interface to appear by default, not just at start-up.

Haven't used 8. Seen it and hate it. Plus, Windoze always has a decent OS one version and then a sucky one the next. They alternate. 7 was a decent one so logically 8 will be a sucky one and 9 will be a decent one. I thought 7 was a step in the right direction. Too bad they could not have continued the trend. Sometimes the Windoze folks seem to be overly influenced by the Apple crowd.

So mostly I hate W8 just on principle, without even using it yet, and I won't use it. Period. W7 isn't bad. I like it. And I am tired of change just for the sake of change, or change as an attempt to make a bunch of other stuff obsolete. Try running your old DOS apps in Windoze lately? It's all about making you buy stuff you shouldn't need to re-buy. Sorta like disposable razor blades. Or the vicious upgrade cycle with the iphone, though that is partly in attempt at defeating the dev teams jailbreak efforts. Wow... funny thing but Google doesn't raise a big fuss about guys rooting their droids. But this is about Windoze yeah and I will state for the record even though I have no experience with W8 that W8 sucks so bad that I won't even try it. Take It with a gram of salt. I has spoken.

You are tough but fair.

Luckily, I bought my computer in September of 2012, just before the release of Windows 7. Everyone I know dislikes Windows 8 - harder to use, slower and annoying. They have all become accustom to Win 8 but, they still prefer Win 7.

My new computer is a 2012 HP with 8 Gigs of RAM. My old 2004 Gateway had 2 Gigs of RAM and had virtually no lock ups.
The new HP hardly runs any faster, it locks up (can't get to the Task Manager and I have to power off to restart), and the cursor and the left click are always caught up in the buffer zone. My Dell at work also has the same issues... I will certainly buy a Gateway the next time!!!

I have used 8 a few times now and find it more cumbersome to use and annoying. It takes more mouse clicks to get where you want to be and is simply not a pleasure to use. I can see this OS working better on a phone etc., but not on a PC. I am looking to buy a new computer and will definitely be loading Win 7 onto it. I have yet to find a serious problem with Win 7; there are some minor aspects that I disliked about Win 7 at first, but they were easily changed with personalized options.

I've not found a single thing about Windows 8 that I like better than 7. They moved and removed things that I can see absolutely no reason for that make my job a lot harder when working with it.

I haven't used it enough to get used to metro or the removal of the start menu, etc. I may not hate it as much as I get accustomed to it but what they removed will always bother me.

I upgraded to 8 then 8.1 and it's ok. If my computers had touch screens it would be much better, but they do not. I installed classic shell, from classicshell.net and it gives me a start menu which goes straight to my classic desktop, I also have another app or little program that is simply a stop, or shutdown program, so I am happy. I can use all the windows apps if I chose, or use the classic desktop type menu.

I got a new laptop about 6 weeks ago. It came with Win8 installed and it is really different from Win7. The one good thing about it is they finally have the plug and play business working. It recognized my blue tooth HP printer all on it's own. Installed all the drivers automatically. Same for my in house wireless. So I'll give them that. However, I use the desktop exclusively. These Apps are the dumbest things ever. I miss the start menu where you could choose your programs and it would list the last several files you had open. I tried installing 8.1, but didn't find it helped. I also killed my SD card reader. I reinstalled Win8 and then had to reinstall my programs. That was a pain, but I'm not touching it again -- unless I find a way to install Win7. It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

I was under the impression that Windows 8 was heavily geared toward touch screens (phones/tablets). Why they would leave such a large percentage of the crowd with an interface that is harder to use with a mouse is beyond me.

I work in a prepress dept, so I have every operating system under the sun on some computer in the department. Even a few Unix machines. I do like windows 7.

I like Windows 7.
I haven't tried Windows 8, but judging by the snapshots I saw and by what other people are saying about it, I would definitely dislike it very much.

I upgraded my XP laptop a while back to Win7. And that's where I'm staying for now. No way I'll choose Windows 8 until it gets some sense and maturity. The Metro interface is childish IMHO.

Like someone else mentioned, Windows 8 is designed for a touch screen. If you use a mouse it is harder to move around. It improved slightly with Windows 8.1. It still sucks.

Another vote for Windows 7.

My condolences for having to move on from Windows XP, a wonderful OS, IMO. (I still resent not being able to useXP, or office 2003 for that matter.
