Williams - Skip the Bowl

If there's one complaint common among haters and lovers it's that Williams dries out too quickly after you put it on your face. YOu might get a great looking lather in the bowl, but once out of the bowl it's about as lasting as the foam on a root beer float.
BUT, i've found that Williams soap works much better and lasts longer if i face lather with it than if i build the lather in a bowl.

bottom line:
SKIP THE BOWL; FACE LATHER INSTEAD.

load your brush as usual, and go straight to your face with it.

I mostly face lather anyway, but I'd only add: Don't skimp on the soap when you load the brush. It's Williams, so it's no time to be parsimonious.

I think this is good advice for any shaving soap. I have found I always get a much better shave when I face lather.

+1. I actually shaved with Williams on a whim last night. I palm-lathered, and then wiped the lather hand on my face.

I say skip the bowl for all soaps and creams too. I would only lather a bowl if I was going to shave it.

you know, the more I think about it, this makes some sense to me. i think i'll just take some newbie time to familiarize myself with each soap/cream, and then once I get a feel for product to water ratios i'll start face-lathering normally. the bowl makes a good lathering/learning tool at first for sure, though.

i haven't tried any other soaps yet, but i agree.
For creams, though, i prefer to lather in a bowl.
does proraso come in a soap?

QFT!

Also, somebody better PIF me a puck of williams or I'll go nuts from all these threads about it :tongue_sm

two bucks at any CVS. you must have a really bad RAD. :biggrin1:

I'd actually recommend skipping another step in lathering Wiliams, which is best explained pictorially:

As an experiment, I decided to try this today. But, instead of loading the brush before beginning the lathering (on my face), I just used the puck like a shaving stick. First, I popped it out of the shaving mug where it was taking up space, wet my beard, and then rubbed the dry Williams puck against the grain over my beard. Then I lathered using the VdH boar brush and proceeded from there, rubbing the puck over my beard again for each pass.

I did a two-pass (WTG and XTG) shave and it came out very nice.

Makes me wonder whether you can use other soaps in the same fashion.

skip the bowl, skip the face, just lather on the puck! I know I know, believe me this is the only soap I do that with, but it works wonderfully for williams and me!

Just a heads up about Williams;
Due to an odd magnetic resonance from the distance to the Earths poles, Williams will NOT lather when it is in the thumb of Michigan.

I am cursed I tell you, totally cursed!! :mad3::mad3:

Wait what's that? A tiny voice tells me I should just use superior soaps like Tabac, and Vintage Williams, and VDH Deluxe, and many others, and just stop worrying about Williams.:laugh:

The puck of modern Williams on the shelf of my shave den is also demanding that I let it have fun with it's friends in the garbage can.:lol:
