Williams and Cella question

looking at cella and williams it seems that they have very similar ingredients but from what I can tell they are very different and wondered if anyone else knows why.

WILLIAMS:
Sodium Tallowate (Saponified Tallow)
Potassium Stearate, (Byproduct of Saponification) <-I think
Sodium Cocoate, (Saponified Coconut oil)
Water, (...)
Glycerin, (humectant)
Tetrasodium Etidronate (a water softener),
Pentasodium Pentetate (another water softener),
Fragrance, (...)
Titanium Dioxide (coloration)

CELLA:
COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) OIL (most likely saponified)
TALLOW (most likely saponified)
STEARIC ACID (used to harden soaps) <- keeps the soap from being too soft I guess
POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE (used to make soft soap)
WATER (...)
POTASSIUM CARBONATE (pearl ash used in soap making) <- I don't know what for though
PARFUM (...)
(no glycerin?)

Cella doesn't even have glycerine so this seems rather odd that williams is more drying than cella which seems to be very popular. The only thing I can think is that cella is superfatted and williams is not but I don't know about that.

I have never used Cella, but Williams is the LEAST drying soap or cream I have used. (I have used about 20 different creams and soaps.)

I guess that is a case of YMMV but it seems odd 1/2 the forum loves williams whereas the other half doesn't but cella seems to get universal praise.

Ratio of ingredients. Take egg, sugar, flour, butter, and milk. Mix them in one ratio with one method, and you have an airy, light, puffy souffle. Another way and you may have dense, rich cookies or cake.

I think both soaps perform well if you can get good lather out of them. I prefer Cella over Williams but prefer Williams over other soaps...

I do not know why they are so different but Cella is more like a shaving cream where Williams is a hard soap. Cella also has Coconut oil as first ingredient which makes it a slick soap.

changing the subject if cella can go bad what does it look like when it goes bad and how can I prevent it from going bad if I buy the large 1000g box.

Trust me, it does. Glycerin is a by-product of the saponification process. Probably the only reason Williams lists it is because they likely add the smallest amount of glycerin to the soap after they mill the living daylights out of the soap which actually removes the stuff. Go figure.

I'm really not a soap junkie but there are two soaps I really like to try, Calla and Arko.

I like Williams and use it regularly. I love the scent, have no problem getting a good lather up quickly and while it feels like it is drying my face, my face feels moisturized within a half hour. If they could do something to stabilize the lather, it would be a great improvement. It is also a long lasting soap.

Cella and Arko seem to be the two soaps most akin to Williams and I would like to see if they might be a better Williams. Too bad I can't get them locally.

Williams and Cella behave very differently for me. Williams lather needs a lot more time and attention to build to the point where it doesn't disappear on my face in 5 seconds. But once I get it to that point it's pretty good in terms of performance... I don't like to wrestle with my lather first thing in the morning, so I don't use Williams anymore.

Cella on the other hand is very easy to build an ideal lather - and it doesn't dry out on the face. It's quite moisturizing and softens the beard well. I MUCH prefer Cella.

I like both with a minor exception... Cella has a horrible almond smell, but it does lather quicker. I would like to try some Arko as well as I have heard it has a more lemony scent.

I have been wet shaving for many years and for whatever reason, have never used Williams. I have and do use Cella and find it a very good soap with a pleasant scent. It lathers beautifully and provides an excellent shave. It is not in the top tier of my rotation, yet, but it is a very good soap.

Happy shaving,

Doug

Sealed plastic container. Tupperware would be my choice, I suppose a ziplock could work in a pinch.

The Cella 1kg brick is originally wrapped in plastic.

We use plastic containers to pack the samples. This works fine. It's not like your sopa would quickly lose fragrance or dry our after two weeks. I used 1 kilo during a whole year (and gave some to friends every now nad then) but I haven't noticed any difference in consistency, fragrance or whatever between the first and the last slice I took.

Bye,

Eric
