Why shave with foam?

I was just reading another thread and it got me thinking (a rare thing) while I can confess to using match 3 from time to time. ( Unfortunately I have very bad health), and when I am not feeling good or shaking to much, (because of medication) I result to a vibrating match 3, however I will still use soap or cream I could never go back to the dark side and use foam. Hear Is a question that came from my thoughts. why, apart from the speed of using foam, do people use it?. imho it costs more to use, you don’t get as good a shave, its not as pleasant to use. and one does not feel refreshed after using it. Mind you that might just my opinion as to feeling refreshed, but imho there is no comparison between the refreshing shave with soap blade etc and a shave with foam. Really I cant see any benefit for the foam product accept speed . Anyway thanks for reading this.

True, foam is faster and more convenient. Personally, I wouldn't want to save time at the expense of getting a lesser quality shave. But for some people that haven't discovered wet-shaving, keeping grooming time to a minimum is important.

Its also easier to pack with you when you travel. And its available all over the place, if you want leave your shave gear at home.

Another factor to consider is cost. Foam gives the illusion of being less expensive. You can pick up a can of foam for under $2, whereas you need to spend many times that to outfit yourself with soap/cream, brush, bowl, scuttle, etc.

I find it interesting that many people that use foam choose Barbasol brand. They probably buy it because of cost. Little do they know that they've chosen the best of the best foam out there. I keep a can of Barbasol (green with Aloe) in my shave den. It hasn't been in business this long for nothing.

The general public is barely aware that there are alternatives. I've only "known better" for a little more than a year myself.

Do you guys distinguish between creams and foam?

I just distinguish between soaps and creams. Bottom line, I've asked my father who still uses his Fusion and shave cream (I guess you'd call it foam). He says it is the expediency. He doesn't want to "turn shaving into an event." He says he just wants to get out of the bathroom. I believe he is depriving himself. I can understand during the weekdays, but I think he should treat himself to quality grooming on the weekends when he has a little more time (like how some people read the New York Times on Saturday morning).

On the other hand, certain high end companies (like the Gentlemen's Refinery) only offer creams, and in that case, I don't believe you are loseing anything in the way of quality, so it may come down to personal preference.

True Barbasol is fantastically cheap, but when I was younger I didn't purchase it for that. It looked better than what Gillette and the others were putting out.

I don't think its cheaper over time. I find I waste a lot less product using soap then I did with Barbasol. In one instance you ended up looking like a man at the Santa Claus parade with inches of foam all over your hand the sink, your face.

With Soap, I find a lot less product is needed to shave one's face. So while initially more expensive, I believe my Geo F. Trumper's 50 milligrams should easily outlast foam. (how long do you guys find it lasts?)

I generally shave with soaps but I (when I need a quick shave/ redo/ or change of pace) will use my can of Barbasol. I love the way it smells and it's kinda nice not to think about it.

I don't distinguish between any shaving stuff that comes out of a spray can. Foam, gel, cream, whatever. It may not really all be the same, but it's the same general idea as far as I'm concerned. Not to be confused with a soap that I lather on my face with a brush.

Its advertised very well and most people think its the only thing about:angry:

That's the exact reason for me i wasn't aware there was anything else out there, i thought using King of Shaves Gell was the only answer (just the best of a bad bunch for me) after trying all the others including clinique/ clarins.
After 3 days shaving with proraso cream and a DE razor the rash on my neck that Id given up hope getting rid of after years of trying has gone down so much i cant believe it. here's hoping soon it's gone completely

I timed my shave the other day. Set my phone on the counter. Hopped in the shower. Shaved came out and pressed pause.

Posted on FB: Timed myself to see how long it took me to shave and shower... 35 minutes... Lets go with a 7 minute shower... 28 minute shave!!! =)

what are you shaving, woman? it shouln't take more than 10 minures lol

So if a shave should only take 10 minutes I guess time is a factor. But I'm depressed how I have to resort to foam and a disposable razor for the 9 weeks of BMT.

What drove me to soaps was that I could not seem to get a wet enough lather. That is probably why I like tallow soaps, I can have them almost runny and they don't break down.

Think of the difference between freshly whipped heavy cream and canned whipped cream.
