Who has problems with their Semogue 1305?

All,

Noticed some have problems with their Semogue 1305s in that the paint chips a bit...so, I have a question for you lot.

Are you completely submersing your 1305s to soak them or just the hairs of the brush? In other words, are you dunking your brush or letting it completely sit in the water?

Thanks for the info!

I have had mine since July & used it 3 times a week since. The only chip is on the bottom from where i dropped it into an empty sink - this has be fixed.

Soak the bristles in a mug/dish with the water 1/4" below the handle. That should do the trick.

I've been using mine for about a month straight. I let it soak in some warm water while I shower. The water comes just up to the metal ring, but no higher. I've had no issues with the paint other than some small paint bubbles on the bottom that came with the brush. The brush shows no sign of forming any "issues" in the near future, either.

I soak just the bristles up to the metal ring, as well. I also have no other issues other than the paint bubbles. The paint bubbles really bother me though. Not because I care about the paint job, but because I wonder what a bad paint job represents. I'm reluctant to buy another Semogue brush because of the issues with the paint on the 1305. The paint bubbles are quite obvious, and were there when the brush left the factory. I figure if this terrible paint job was considered "good enough" to get past quality control, then what other production flaws were "good enough" for the company? It's hard for me to look past shoddy workmanship because it tells me the workman/artisan didn't take pride in his work.

Interesting...

I've had mine for about a month now and no problems at all. Paint has not bubbled. In fact, I love the brush... it's really softened up nice too... I toss it in my bowl, leaning the handle against the rim and letting the bristles sit submerged while I have my shower. I don't let the handle stay submerged but it obviously gets wet.

I get what you're saying, DSB. When pride isn't taken in the obvious things, who knows where else corners were cut that might not be obvious and easily hidden. That being said, I also have a 730 from Semogue and it has no QC problems at all (it's also an acrylic handle, though). Also, I'm obviously no expert by my post count and maybe I'm wrong, but I've never heard of anyone having any functional problems with their Semogues, e.g. excessive bristle loss, poor lathering performance, etc. Most of it with the 1305 recently has been aesthetics out-of-the-box regarding paint issues, or people dropping the brush and the paint chipping, and I don't believe I've ever read about any QC issues regarding any other Semogue model (that's not to say there aren't any reports, I just haven't read any in my limited time here). Out-of-the-box aesthetics I can understand someone being upset with. If its new, it should look pristine. But, for example, if you dropped your cell phone and the LCD cracked, you wouldn't blame the QC of the LCD/cell phone manufacturer (well, you might try, we all would :biggrin1:... cause we're ticked our new toy is broken). Obviously the fault was yours. That's not to say that the manufacturer couldn't have tried to produce a more robust design, taking into account that sometimes things get dropped... So, could the paint bubbles be better?... absolutely, yes. But I don't believe the chipped paint constitutes a QC issue.... its a known vulnerability on these boards and is within the user's control (I'm not meaning to imply that you stated the chipping was a QC issue).

Instead, I kinda look at it this way: For me, the bubbles on the bottom accentuate the fact that it was hand made by a small, family run (I believe) company, and that no one else's brush has the same "character" marks as mine. In that sense, its an "original". That's my point of view becuase I choose to accept the bubbles as a uniquely identifying feature (not that I could pick it out of a line-up or anything ), but I can completely understand someone not sharing that view.

This was my worry. Couldn't of said it better.

Im on my second 1305 in 3 years. Both are fine, the oldest is faded but no chipping. My favorite brushes. My 2000, it's chipping though.

I think submersing them in hot water is bad after a period of time. IMO the only time it should be soaked is to break it in and soften the bristles.

Leon from Vintage Scent has been on the boards more than once advising that one NOT soak the handle of the brush during your pre-shave ritual.
Has anyone brought the paint problems to Leon's attention?.

No problems at all with mine once it broke in. There was a little dye in the bristles that rinsed off early on in its life. Handle looks great but again I'm not soaking it.
