What's new

Which NEW is this?

Picked this up at a thrift store.
My other NEW has a patent number and "patent reissued number" on the underside of the head but this has neither. Also this one is a ball end whereas my other NEW is a hollow thick handle.

looks like a NEW head from the 30s with a Tech handle from the 50s or 60s in a Contract Tech case from the 40s

For what it is worth, the Tech handle works quite well with the New head. Not too shabby for 3 bones, IMO.

So it is a replacement? I didn't know if there were any ballend NEW's or not but the handles finish exactly matches the head.

Yes.
There were lots of ball end News but the handles had a smooth band just above the ball end and just below the neck.
Gillette used the same plating process on their News and their Techs. If there is not much wear on the New head, then they should be a pretty close match.

I believe amishmotorboat is correct.

Thank you gents for the info :thumbup1:
Seems I bought a Frankenrazor without knowing but it was well worth the price.
The Old Type in my signature is also a handle mismatch but I NEVER have to worry about a crack developing in it...you could punch sheetmetal or fend off an attacker with it! Viva la Frankenrazors!

The earliest NEW's used leftover handle stock from the discontinued Old Types.

Thread Necro but I have finally gotten around to shaving with this particular razor :)
I replaced the Tech handle with a gold tones Ball End from an Old Type which I believe is the correct ball end style for a NEW

I have always been into Old Type's and Super Speeds but I have to say the NEW ain't nothing to shake your head at! This is an EXCELLENT shaving piece of equipment and I am gonna say it's in my rotation from now on ;)

You bought it almost two years ago . . . forgot which box you put it in???

Glad to hear you enjoyed it . . . the NEW is a great shaver!!

Just keep thinking you rescued the Frankenrazor from an unknown fate! For three dollars you HAVE to take a chance........ not bad, the head alone is worth more than that.

I just didn't like the LOOKS of it :) A NEW is ugly next to an Old Type and a Super Speed. Looks aside it is a GREAT shaver!

You're right . . . the typical NEW (~80 years later) is de-plated, patina-covered, and smells like a wet, sour trumpet.

My gawd . . . what an outstanding shave in spite of its looks!!

I think the long combed NEW was the Sexiest head Gillette ever made.
