Where's Williams?

I have not yet decided whether to join the Week of Williams, but I thought I would at least buy a puck and try to lather it. When I decided to do this, I thought that the purchase would be easy, but the lather might be more challenging. Now I can only pray to St Catherine of Alexandria - or perhaps to St Florian - that lathering it isn't any harder than finding it was.

The closest store that sells any shaving tackle is a 99 Ranch. This is an ethnic Chinese chain, and while they have some canned goo on their shelves, I was unsurprised to see a total lack of Williams. The next closest store is a CVS, where one employee scratched his head and said that he thought maybe he had heard of Williams somewhere or other. There was none on the shelves, nor at the Safeway next door.

The next stop was a Rite-Aid, somewhat further afield. Their web site claims that they sell Williams, so surely I could find a puck here? No such luck: nothing on the shelves, and no RSC either. I shook the dust of this store from my sandals (actually mud from my boots - it's raining out) and went on my way.

Walgreens doesn't even claim to sell Williams, but I checked anyway. I also checked a small local grocery store called Trang's, without success.

At this point I had given up. Would I have to mail-order Williams? Had it really come to that?

But first I had some other shopping to do so I stopped into another local grocery store called Draegers. It's a bit like Whole Foods, but with less of an emphasis on organic products. I wasn't expecting them to sell shaving products at all, but I needed a fresh piece of parmesan cheese and a few other odds and ends. While I was there, I checked for shaving products anyway, and found about five boxes of Williams ($1.29, plus tax). They also had plenty of Aqua-Velva Blue.

So now my puck is soaking, and soon I will try to lather it.

I can now state that Williams lathers easily with my Omega #49. The lather isn't as good as Tabac, but what is?

I thought this might be some sort of cool shaving version of "Where's Waldo?"

That's what it felt like. In every store I would find the shaving section, then stare at rows and rows of canned goo while trying to spot a little blue and white box. In some places I also checked for Williams hiding among the bar soaps.

Jeez, could you not hear the Shaving Gods telling you to avoid Williams at all costs by making it so unavailable?

Glad you found some; at least you know one store locally that carries it. If you have a favorite grocery store close to you (and you wind up liking Williams), it can't hurt to ask the manager if they can order it for you. Some grocery stores are pretty good about doing that, especially if they know you're a regular customer.

I don't suppose YOU'RE the one buying up all the Williams from the Drug Mart on Detroit road in Avon, are you? They used to have a ton, up until the last couple months. They still have a spot on the shelf for it, but it's been bare lately. I keep saying I'll give Williams another shot next time they have some in stock

Wow you guys in the USA are really hurting for shave products there. Up to the north there is lots of A.V in glass, and enough williams to shave every man in the city for a long while.

I got my williams at winco foods, only cost 96 cents. Took it home and presoaked it in my old spice mug for about a half an hour. Gonna go to making lather with it this morning using my barbershop branded boar brush. A week of williams ought to be pretty cool. Nothing like using a classic.

No, actually I get mine from either the CVS on Detroit across from Herb's Tavern in Rocky River or the Heinen's just down Detroit between Rocky River and Lakewood (I live off of Detroit just east of Clague). You can also try the Drug Mart at Columbia and Lorain, they usually have plenty of Williams.
