Where to hone a straight in Montreal?

Hi guys,

I'm trying to find someone to hone my Dovo Prima Klang straight in Montreal.

I have a free honing from straight razor designs but the shipping cost back to Canada is about 30$ + my shipping cost to send it.

If anyone knows of someone please let me know.

Thanks!!

$30 for a free honing... It sounds like it's time to pick up a finishing stone and learn to maintain your own razors! You can get a nice stone for the price of a small number of "free" honings :). The Spyderco Ultra Fine is a very low maintenance stone (just clean it regularly), don't use oil or water while honing, great edges too.

I don't know anyone "in Montreal" that does it. Across Canada, there are a few for sure. You could check with a vendor or hobbyist here if they provide such a service. Buying your own stones to do it can be a solution.

If you do that, you got to ask yourself if you want to hone a razor from A to Z or simply hone it to maintain the edge. If you just want to hone the razor to maintain the edge, you will get a few answers
  • Some use pastes only
  • Some use 1 stone only
  • Some use 2 stones like a DMT and a stone to lap it
  • Some use a stone and pastes
  • Some use something else (many stones, with or without pastes)

My recommendation would be to do it yourself. Check with the last person who honed your razor what they used. I would then get that setup for myself (at least just the finisher stone) and sharpen it. A would say that a loupe or microscope to look at the edge is a must if you want to be sure that your edge is all good.

I fixed that for you. I understood what you meant, but to a person new to honing it may sound like you need to lap a DMT, which you don't.

Fellow Prima Klang user here:

Unless he has damaged the Prima Klang or stropped it poorly he probably just needs to freshen it a little. It is a very thin blade with an ultra small bevel. I would get a double sided paddle strop, 1 micron diamond on one side, .25 micron on the other. Freshen the blade with no more than 5-6 laps on the 1 then the .25, every 6-7 shaves or as needed. An alternative, red Dovo paste on a paddle. It is getting hard to find but works well. Fendrihan could be your friend and leave you set for the long haul with minimal inconvenience. Easy road to being self sustaining.

If you don't know where to start, but are interested, I wrote up a sticky for that very problem. It's at the top of this forum. Hope it helps.
