Where Is The Menthol?

After hearing all the great reviews about Poraso/Bigelow and the menthol kick, I decided to try it. I got 3 travel size Bigelows for $10 and figured I would try it out, give 1 to my son and put the other in a PIF bag I have going for someone.

Well, I tried the Bigelow today expecting this freeze your face off experience. I did a three pass shave with touch up and left thinking "OK, maybe I felt a little tingle, but that was not what I was expecting." I used about 0.5" of cream and got a good lather (to my mind not as good as Tabac) and had a good enough shave, but I don't see what all the fuss is about with the menthol. Is there a trick to get the menthol to come out and play?

The Bigelow is not as strong as the Proraso. Try the Proraso green you will like it. Also try the preshave in Proraso. It will have that wake me up tingly feeling to it

My experience with Proraso is that the menthol is there, but it's no where near the freezing menthol kick you'll get from aftershaves like Aqua Velva or Barbasol. You probably shouldn't expect more than a tingle. Try a thin layer of Noxema under your lather with each pass. It gives a bit more of the tingle as well but again, not approaching the aftershave freeze. If you like that cold/warm contrast, try cold shaving or at least rinse your razor in cold water. I love the feel of the cold metal on my face.

Wake up shave stick has a fair menthol kick

Looking on the Saint Charles shave site I don't see it being offered currently

Agreed with above, Proraso is a nice tingle, but not a face freeze. If you want a face freeze from a cream or soap, then you want to try QCS Vostok. Welcome to Antarctica with that one!

+1 on the QCS Vostok. Palmolive menthol cream (in a tube) is second. I haven't tried Godrej or Everest (from Russia).

I think people who say Proraso has a "nice menthol kick" are like people who think Barqs is a really good rootbeer. Sure, it's okay, if you're not a connoisseur.

It is the Proraso pre-shave cream that is insane with menthol. It is super powerful like vicks vapor rub. I used it a few times and can't stand it, too strong for me.

Well, I ordered a sample pack from QCS with Vostok, Cayman, Key Lime, Celestial Woods & Queen Charlotte. I figured I would stick my toe in the water rather than have a whole big container of Vostok if I decide I don't like it. It sounds like I will like it, but you never know until you give it a go.

If you want to freeze your face you need to try Queen Charlotte Soaps Vostok cream. Man, this stuff is cold.

If you want a strong blast of menthol try Proraso pre shave with any soap/cream, only you won't be able to smell whatever you choose is all.

I suppose it's a matter of personal preference, but menthol's cooling effect is not something I like. For me, the sensation dulls my skin's nerves and prevents me from getting the feel I want from each stroke.

I know the first time I used Proraso green soap it was very cold, now just a little cool afterward. I just really enjoy the scent of the stuff and it's performance. I do miss the face freeze though.

I agree about Proraso green, I love the scent and performance but there's not much menthol. I don't think you'll be disappointed with Vostok, that stuff is cold!

boy does it! mix that sucker in with poraso green or Bigelow and you get a nice shave :thumbup1: i personally like the after feeling after i close my pores.

i get a pleasant, cooling sensation from proraso green. i'm not sure it's intended to freeze your skull off. i think that in life, there are intended to be degrees of menthol...atum.
