What's new

What's this? A gold xmas super adjustable for only $45?

Looks more like standard nickel with whacked out color balance in the photos.

What are you talking about? It doesn't say anything about gold or christmas in that listing.

Did you link to the wrong auction?

From what I recall when I was hunting one down, the gold plated ones are all date stamped O4 or P1, they only made them the end of 1969 and the beginning of 1970.

There is something else interesting about that one, in case no one else has noticed. I don't think it's $45 "interesting" but still... Who's got a guess?

You're right. I was recently lucky enough to find a black and gold Super Adjustable with the date code O-4 (my birth year/quarter). It's really nice and clean. I know some P-1 models exist, but that's about it. I am fortunate to have it.

A lot of times pictures with bad lighting will fool you. I've seen too many regular Slims on the bay look like gold Slim Adjustables (Aristocrat) or regular Fatboys look like a gold Executive version.

I was hunting down a P1 at the time since it's at least a birthyear razor for me. :)

I asked the seller if it was silver or gold color.

They responded "silver"

Mystery solved. Case closed. You can all go home now

I picked up an actual gold one I believe it is P1 from the bay two weeks ago for $20 shipped. Did I do good? It's pristine as well.

I am soooooo going to throw down the bucks on that one! That razor is very rare and nice! Especially compared to the one I found at an old, smelly, antique mall for $14 in excellent condition with a case in perfect working order. Certainly it is subpar to that offering on the bay. Besides, who am I to question the word of such a highly reputable seller. After all, I am merely an amateur collector who is easily swayed by shiny objects!

Mine has the metal plate also. I would have never really realized the different shape of it had Alex not mentioned it with pics in another thread.

I contacted the seller, and heard back. There does not appear to be a date code inside the head.
I think we've found the missing link showing that the first square bottomed blade trays were made intentionally without date codes for use with the old metal adjustment plates.

Is that possible, or is is just faint and the seller doesn't know what to look for? Mine is an O-2 but the O is very faint. To read it, it has to be at the correct angle, or it doesn't show up.

This isn't a gold Super Adjustable, in case you'd missed that higher up in the thread.

Assuming that the seller is correct, this one has a W-2 date code on the bottom of the adjustment plate. What AMB is talking about is the lack of a date code on the inside of the head, since this razor has the rectangular-stamped guard plate that the later models with plastic adjustment plates used.

It seems like the switch-over to the rectangular plate probably did happen during '76, ahead of the change to the plastic adjustment plate in '77, since we've seen:

  • NDC diamond-stamped guard plate, DC metal adjustment plate (standard early Super Adjustable)
  • NDC rectangular-stamped guard plate, DC metal adjustment plate (this razor)
  • DC rectangular-stamped guard plate, DC metal adjustment plate (double-coded razor with W-3 under head and X-1 inside head)
  • NDC rectangular-stamped guard plate, NDC plastic adjustment plate (razor with no date codes)
  • DC rectangular-stamped guard plate, NDC plastic adjustment plate (standard late Super Adjustable)
