What's the Deal With Limes?

Hi

I went 50 years never giving lime any thought what so ever other than in a Key Lime Pie.

Walking thru a drug store I do not see any men's lime products. Just the usual same old same old.

Then I discover the world of wet shaving and limes are all around us! Every manufacturer seems to have lime products

Why are limes reserved for us? Have the masses rejected them? Maybe they don't even know? I didn't know

You would think a mainstream mens product manufacturer would have thrown it out there. It popular here. Why wouldn't it be popular there too?

It is a curiosity is it not?

Thoughts? Opinions?

Likely not mainstream because the scents are very fleeting.
A successful lime-bearing fragrance needs to have complementary basenotes that hold the "feel" of the lime longer.

I love the scent of GFT West Indian Limes... but it is one of my disappointments... it's the kind of cologne that I would have to keep in my desk, because it needs to be reapplied every 15 minutes.

Barbasol used to make a lime shaving cream. And there were several lime aftershaves in the '70s. My guess is that it's not trendy enough for the masses. As usual, we here march to the beat of a different drummer.

Not related to the subject at all, but I was triggered by the "Limes" topic title :wink2:

I happen to live virtually on the "Limes", the ancient Roman road which was the border of their empire.
Actually it is located almost next to our house, because of the fund of ancient watchtowers, and the remains of a Roman ship.

My only bad buy was eShave Verbena Lime cream but it seems as if everyone is in the same boat as me. The scent just isn't what I was expecting. Not strong or long lasting.

+1, T&H is nice as well plus has a little extra in terms of longevity.

I think Lime is not a mainstream scent because it is not the traditional "manly" scent like a musk. But it is clean, refreshing and sporty and can be used for all occasions - unlike some of the heavier, muskier scents.

I use Mike's Lime soap and Razorock Evil Eye aftershave wax. Not a lot of staying power but great scents on both.

The only Lime shaving product I have tried is Trumpers and that one lit me up big time. Instant burning sensation.

Now I do like the Captain's Lime after shave. That one is a winner for me!!!

I really like limes--possible because they go so well with gin.

But the idea of putting limes on my face doesn't appeal to me. Lime is a pretty harsh acid. In college I went to the dentist because my teeth were throbbing in pain, all the time. After the examination he said he found nothing unusual. Then he asked: "Are you sucking a lot of lemons or limes?" I thought, "Oh crap! Am I drinking THAT much tequila?"

Now I know there probably aren't limes in the cream, but even so, it seems counter-intuitive to me. I avoid lime scented products.

I like a lime scent. It smells fresh to me. Lemon smells fresh also but there is just something extra about lime. I'm wearing Limes and Peppercorn right now as a matter of fact. I smell pretty limey.

I don't know what the deal is, but I recently found my first bottle of Avon Island Lime aftershave, and it is fantastic.

Limes played an important part to navies (especially the Royal British) while settling the new world. It was one of the few things they could maintain and use to fight scurvy. Even Rum rassions began to be watered down with water, lime, and sugar and called Grog.

Think of it much the way everything from Turkey smells like lemons. It's just a traditional "clean" scent.

The lime essential oil is in the skin. It's not acidic. Not the same thing as what ate your teeth.

Castle Forbes Lime cream, Old Spice fresh lime, and Pinaud Citrus Musk are products I am most familiar with that smell like limes. It makes sense to me because lime is a clean and refreshing scent.

I love like products, and have my fair share.

To answer you question, I think it's the simplicity of lime that makes it hard to mass market, no bells no whistles; so it becomes associated either with old men and G&Ts or slightly femenine.
