What’s a good and soothing shave balm

Hi All

Beginning to do a bit more shaving now the wife asked me to do a Goatee instead of a full beard. Although I’ve been wet shaving for many years with a DE, keeping it tidy, I now have more skin exposed that hasn’t seen the light of day for over 35 years.

Coupled with the fact that I’m now trying straight edge shaving as well, this is causing my 60 year skin to get a bit sore with razor burn. I know that my technique will improve and my skin will harden up a bit, but in the meantime, can anyone recommend a really good shave balm / cream that will soothe the current tenderness.

Yours hopefully from a sore man based in the UK.

I agree with Speick and Weleda. I find Baume.be and Rockwell are outstanding too. I’m one of few that quite dislikes Nivea. I do not find that it soothes or moisturizes well.

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions.

Have done some shopping and got a couple of balms; firstly, Proraso Aftershave Balm Sensitive and secondly, Taylor’s of Bond Street Luxury Aftershave Balm.

Having tried them both, I prefer the TOBS, it is a bit more soothing and has a slight cooling effect.

Keep in mind that balms will help to sooth and moisturise your skin, so if during the day you start to feel like the razor burn is flaring up again or hasn't gone away you can put some more balm on it (I sometimes put on balm after my shave, at lunch night and in the evening if it's been a bad shave, or sometimes just because I like the scent, soothing sensation!)

My three favorites, and they are all wonderfully soothing for me and my face .....

This is the only after shave balm that's ever worked for me. I have pretty sensitive skin and everything else seemed to irritate my skin even worse than the shave. This stuff is great. Last a long time because a little goes a long way. Any hyaluronic acid will do the job, this just happened to be what was nearby.
