What type of shoes do guys wear with shorts?

I'm not a "shoe" guy so to speak. I've got Red Wings stock #8700 that I wear to work (with jeans). They are black leather and I know enough to know that they would not work with shorts. Then I've got cowboy boots I wear with jeans when not at work. Also might looks slightly odd with shorts.

But what kind of shoe do guys where with shorts? I've been to lots of shoe stores and I just can't decide so I've been wearing flip flops and I'm starting to "grow out" of the cargo shorts and flip flops theme.

I wear khaki shorts, the loose fitting comfortable kind with cargo pockets. and mostly a simple t-shirt or button up casual short sleeve shirt.

I'd like to avoid sneakers or gym shoes.

So what is the professional suggestion?

I usually opt for canvas sneakers. That's assuming it's a casual outing like hanging out in a friend's backyard or going to the zoo. Anything more formal than that and I don't wear shorts. If I had boat shoes those would be an option as well, but I'm holding out until I get a yacht.

For heavy summer use I'd go with the iconic blue Vans!

Sperry Topsiders - they're classic and go well with long pants too.

Rainbow Flip Flops in brown leather since your shorts are khaki. These take some breaking in, but once they do, they can last for years. The pair I have were bought over 5 years ago and see heavy use on a near daily basis.

I usually wear Sandals or some Ben Sherman shoes that are reminiscent of Vans shoes.

Sandals, Converse Allstars, Tevas, running shoes, boat shoes. Anything but cowboy boots and work shoes.

I am not a fan of mandals/tevas. I am usually in a a canvas or "fashion", think PUMA, sneaker. If you are looking for something more dressy(if shorts can be dressy) and don't like boat shoes you can get a pair of driving moccasins.

I was looking for a slip on shoe as well. and I don't mind the canvas but I don't like the thick white soles.

I'd prefer a leather shoe that would go with shorts, if that is possible.

I looked at JC Penny today didn't find anything.

Flip flops. I am not a fan of the other forms of the sandal.

Depending on where you are, your age and your style, the penny loafer is a possibility.

Lose the cargo pockets and get shorts that are actual shorts - not cropped baggy pants that end around your calf.

Khaki, faded red, seersucker, madras or plaid shorts that end just above your knees - an inch or two is correct. If you find a pair you like that are too long, spend the couple of bucks to have the tailor hem them to the proper length for you. These shorts will go with anything; polos, tee shirts and casual button downs.

Shoes are easy: boat shoes, penny loafers or (if you are balls out preppy) white or dirty bucks. Under no circumstances are socks to be worn with any of those - even the bucks

Flip flops are for the beach, if you are in social situations you are better off with the options listed above.
