He is obviously clean-shaven in the movies, so I'm wondering what razor he would use? Cartridge, DE, straight?

Haha, yeah. Cartridge makes sense; he'll be able to carry it on the plane without checking his bags.

They're my favorite books, and they do answer the question in a roundabout way. He uses a cheap drug store Gillette that's available, that was available throughout Europe in the late 70s. Mostly because he hardly ever goes back for his bags once the hotel is under surveillance.

Straight razor, that way he can use it as a weapon also. Bar of shave soap(hard puck) so he can use that as a back up weapon to throw it at his enemy's. 
Haven't seen the movies, but from the books, I figure it's whatever gets the job done fastest. The dude is much too keyed up to shave with a straight razor.
